The Rooftop Above the Mall, with the Castle in the Window
TOPO sits on the sixth floor of the Centro Comercial Martim Moniz, a 1980s shopping centre on the north edge of the city centre. The entrance is unglamorous — a service lift up from the side of the building — but the terrace at the top has the best mid-range castle-and-city view in Lisbon. The Castelo de São Jorge sits directly opposite at eye level, the Alfama tiles cascade down between, and the Tagus river opens out beyond.
The bar opened in 2014 and was the room that kicked off the now-saturated Lisbon rooftop scene. The format is intentionally simple: small Portuguese plates, a thirty-line wine list (heavy on Vinho Verde and Bairrada), a tight cocktail menu of gin-and-tonics and aperitivo builds. The food is petisco-format — cured meats, cheeses, small octopus, sardine paté on toast.
The terrace seats roughly eighty and turns over slowly. Best in the hour before sunset, when the castle light moves through the colour palette the bar was built around. Walk-ins until 6pm on a weekday; reservations through their website for sunset windows on weekends. The bar also runs a second location at the Chiado and a third in Belém, but the Martim Moniz original holds the view and the reputation.
Best Time to Visit
Sixty minutes before sunset, any day. The castle light is at its best and the terrace turns over enough to find a seat.
Who It Is For
Visitors and locals who want the Lisbon sunset terrace at sensible prices. Best for two or four; groups of six need a reservation.
