Doping Club opened in 2013 as the bar of JK Place Roma, the Florentine Ori family's third boutique hotel after Florence and Capri. The bar runs as the property's lobby counter, with a small interior lounge and a back-bar of 200 bottles weighted toward Italian amari and house gins.

It works for a 9pm post-dinner cocktail with a hotel guest or a small group of two on a weeknight. Avoid if the goal is a budget cocktail: the list opens at 22 EUR and the bar follows the JK Place service standard. The Telegraph's 2023 JK Place Roma review placed the bar at "the best Negroni list in any Italian hotel under 100 rooms."

The lighting drops below 80 lux after 9pm and the room runs a jazz-and-bossa rotation at conversation-easy volume. House Beautiful's 2022 JK Place Roma feature described the lounge as "the only Rome hotel bar where the back-bar holds more amari than gin."

What to order, what to skip

Order the Garibaldi 1860 (24 EUR) built on Campari with house-pressed Sicilian blood orange and a Mediterranean salt rim, paired with the truffle-and-Parmigiano plate (24 EUR). Skip the imported whisky pours, which Tripadvisor reviewers note are priced at a 4x markup over the same labels at the building's restaurant. The Bianco Negroni at 22 EUR uses Mancino Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc gin and is what the bartenders pour when guests ask for the second order off the printed twelve.

Who shows up and when

A 7pm to 9pm aperitivo crowd of hotel guests and Centro Storico regulars, a 9pm to 11pm post-dinner crowd that turns the counter, and an 11pm to 1am crowd of regulars holding the lounge. Travel + Leisure noted that "the JK Place service runs at a Florentine pace: bartenders know the second round before the first is finished."

When to walk in

Doping Club runs three open shifts and the right one depends on the goal. The 6pm to 7pm window is the slowest of the night and the only shift where a walk-in lands a lounge banquette without a reservation, though the cocktail list opens at full strength only at 6:30pm. From 7pm to 9pm the counter fills with aperitivo orders, the back-bar runs at peak service, and the bartender pace runs about one build every 14 minutes. The 9pm to 11pm window is what Tripadvisor regulars flag as the right shift for a confirmed seat with a post-dinner third round, and the lounge clears as guests move out for the night. After 11pm the counter holds the room and the cocktail list runs to the full twelve. Sunday and Monday are the easiest nights for a walk-in; Friday and Saturday require a reservation 48 hours out.
