Amsterdam's after-work scene is compact, serious about quality, and remarkably easy to navigate on foot. The Jordaan, De Pijp, and the canals between them contain more good post-work drinking than most cities twice the size. We've put in the hours identifying which bars earn a second visit. These are where the local professionals actually go when the working day ends — and they're not in the tourist guides.
The Essential Amsterdam Bars
01
Tales & Spirits
Jordaan
$$$
A narrow, candlelit bar that pioneered the Amsterdam craft cocktail movement and has stayed relevant for a decade. Post-work professionals fill the stools from 5:30pm. Order the Oude Genever Martini — this is the city, after all.
Order: Oude Genever Martini
02
Wynand Fockink
Red Light District
$$
Amsterdam's best proeflokaal (tasting house), operating since 1679. Standing room only; you drink your jenever over the bar without handles, Dutch-style. Mandatory for anyone visiting the city on business. Order the aged Korenwijn.
Order: Aged Korenwijn
03
Door 74
Leidseplein Area
$$$$
Ring the bell, get in, and you're in one of Amsterdam's finest hidden cocktail bars. The menu changes seasonally. A favourite among the city's financial sector crowd. Order the Negroni variation of the month.
Order: Negroni Variation
04
Bar Oldenhof
Jordaan
$$$
A beautiful, calm wine bar on one of the Jordaan's prettiest streets. The after-work crowd tends to be architects, designers, and film industry regulars from nearby studios. Natural wine focus, excellent charcuterie. Order a glass of biodynamic orange wine.
Order: Biodynamic Orange Wine
05
Brouwerij 't IJ
De Pijp
$$
Amsterdam's most beloved craft brewery, housed inside a windmill. The after-work crowd is mixed, local, and serious about beer. Order the Columbus IPA or ask what's fresh from the tank.
Order: Columbus IPA
Off the Beaten Path
The second batch covers Amsterdam's quieter, neighbourhood-level gems — the kind of places where regulars have their own stools and bartenders already know your order after two visits.
06
Café De Wetering
De Pijp
$
A traditional bruine kroeg (brown café) with sawdust on the floor and no pretensions. The after-work crowd here are residents; tourists rarely find it. Order a Heineken and a jenever chaser, as intended.
Order: Heineken & Jenever Chaser
07
Little Collins
De Pijp
$$$
Relaxed Antipodean energy in a tight De Pijp space. Good cocktails, excellent natural wines, and a kitchen that runs until 10pm. Popular with expats in the tech and fashion industries. Order the Espresso Martini — they do it properly here.
Order: Espresso Martini
08
Hiding in Plain Sight
Jordaan
$$$
The menu is a map of Amsterdam; each cocktail corresponds to a neighbourhood. Gets the after-work tech crowd from the Damrak offices. Order the Centrum cocktail or ask the bartender which neighbourhood they'd recommend.
Order: Centrum Cocktail
09
De Koffie Salon
Oud-West
$$
A day-to-night conversion: coffee until 5pm, wine and cocktails after. Tiny, popular with locals from the Oud-West design district, and near impossible to get a table on Fridays without arriving early. Order a glass of Grüner Veltliner.
Order: Grüner Veltliner
Our Verdict
Amsterdam rewards the after-work drinker who goes off-canal. The Jordaan and De Pijp have the best concentration of genuinely local bars, and neither requires booking ahead for smaller groups. Most of these venues close at midnight, so this is an early-evening city — plan accordingly. For groups of four or more, Door 74 and Tales & Spirits appreciate a heads-up.
