Budapest has one of the most distinctive bar cultures in Europe. The best bars in Budapest span from the original ruin bars that put the city on the drinking map to a new generation of serious cocktail venues in the Jewish Quarter and Belvaros that have nothing to do with the ruin aesthetic. We covered 25 venues across four days. These 10 represent the full spectrum of what Budapest currently offers. Travelling the region? Our Athens bar guide covers a Mediterranean counterpoint — a city with equally serious cocktail credentials and a very different drinking rhythm.
01
Szimpla Kert
Jewish Quarter
$$
Ruin Bar / Iconic
The original ruin bar and still the most interesting. Szimpla operates across a two-storey labyrinth of repurposed furniture and art installations in a former factory building. The Sunday morning farmers market has become its own Budapest institution. Go early on a weekday evening to appreciate the space before the crowds arrive.
Order: Hungarian palinka or house draft beer — this is a place for exploration, not precision cocktails
02
Instant-Fogas
Jewish Quarter
$$
Ruin Bar / Multi-room
The largest ruin bar complex in Budapest, operating across multiple buildings with different music and atmosphere in each room. The Instant room is better for drinking; the Fogas side runs louder music and a younger crowd. The best strategy is to arrive at 9pm and work through the rooms before choosing where to settle.
Order: Unicum Hungarian bitters shot or a straightforward local lager
03
Ellato Kert
Jewish Quarter
$$
Garden Bar / Neighbourhood
A smaller and more local-feeling ruin bar in the Jewish Quarter with a large garden courtyard that draws neighbourhood residents who want the ruin aesthetic without the tourist crowds. The beer list includes Hungarian craft alongside mainstream options and the atmosphere is significantly more relaxed.
Order: Dreher craft lager or Hungarian pale ale from Monyo Brewery

Budapest's Craft Beer Scene: Beyond Dreher
Budapest's craft beer scene has exploded over the last five years, driven by a generation of Hungarian brewers who trained in the US and UK and returned home. The results are genuinely impressive.
04
Monyo Brewing Co. Tap Room
Ujlipotvaros
$$
Brewery Taproom / Industrial
Budapest's most decorated craft brewery runs a taproom in the 13th district with 10 taps of house beers. The Monyo IPAs are among the best being produced in Central Europe right now. The space attracts a mix of local residents and visiting beer tourists who have done their homework.
Order: Current IPA release or the house stout
05
Hedon
Belvaros
$$
Craft Beer Bar / Intimate
A focused craft beer bar in the inner city with 20 taps weighted towards Hungarian and Czech producers. The bottle list extends to 80 references and the staff's knowledge is excellent. Compact and unpretentious — no food, no distractions — a bar for people who want to concentrate on what is in the glass.
Order: Whatever Hungarian craft the staff recommends this visit
06
Only Good Beer
Kazinczy Street
$$
Beer Bar / Social
A Jewish Quarter craft beer bar that sits at the intersection of the tourist circuit and the local drinking scene, managing to serve both without compromising either. The 12 taps rotate constantly with a focus on Hungarian and regional producers. The outdoor terrace is one of the best spots in the neighbourhood.
Order: Hungarian seasonal pale ale or a Central European craft lager

Budapest's Hidden Gems: The Cocktail Bars the Ruin Bar Crowd Misses
Beyond the ruin bars, Budapest has developed a serious cocktail scene that operates in a parallel register — quiet, precise, reservation-driven. These venues have little to do with the city's party reputation.
07
High Note SkyBar
Belvaros
$$$
Rooftop / Panoramic
A rooftop bar on top of the Aria Hotel with one of the best views in Budapest — the dome of St. Stephen's Basilica at eye level and the city spreading out in every direction. The cocktail programme is more serious than most hotel rooftops. Book a sunset table in summer.
Order: Hungarian sparkling wine aperitif or the house craft Martini variation
08
Boutiq Bar
Belvaros
$$$
Cocktail / Award-winning
Budapest's most internationally decorated cocktail bar, consistently on Central European best bar lists. The menu focuses on Hungarian spirits and seasonal ingredients — palinka base spirits, Tokaji wine reductions, local botanicals — reworked with international cocktail technique.
Order: The seasonal Hungarian spirits menu or the house sour
09
Doblo Wine Bar
Jewish Quarter
$$
Wine / Hungarian Focus
A wine bar in the Jewish Quarter that makes the compelling case for Hungarian wine to anyone willing to surrender their preconceptions. The Tokaji selection is the deepest in Budapest and the team's knowledge of the Eger, Villany, and Balaton regions is excellent.
Order: Dry Tokaji Furmint or an Egri Bikaver from a top producer
10
Csendes Lettem
Jewish Quarter
$$
Bar / Eccentric Decor
A Jewish Quarter bar that shares the ruin aesthetic but operates on a much smaller and more intimate scale than the major venues. The walls are covered in found objects, the drinks are well-priced, and the crowd is a mix of locals and clued-in visitors. A better first ruin bar experience than Szimpla for the uninitiated.
Order: House craft beer or a simple Hungarian palinka shot
Our Verdict on Budapest's Bar Scene
Budapest is one of Europe's great drinking cities and one of its best value propositions. The ruin bars are a genuine phenomenon worth experiencing rather than avoiding because they have become famous, the craft beer scene has reached international quality levels, and the cocktail bars in Belvaros are as good as anything in Vienna or Prague. Allocate four evenings and spread them across the Jewish Quarter, Belvaros, and Ujlipotvaros for the complete picture.
If you want to go deeper on the bars that most visitors walk past entirely, our Budapest hidden gem bars guide covers 10 under-the-radar venues from cellar speakeasies in the V. District to natural wine bars in the VIII. The list starts where the ruin pub circuit ends.
