Berlin in the festive season is not the city it becomes in summer. The best bars festive season Berlin offers are the ones that embrace December rather than resist it — places where the cold outside makes the room feel warmer, the cocktail list gets darker and richer, and the crowd is more local and more committed than the summer tourist wave that fills the terraces from June to August. We have spent multiple December weeks identifying which bars are worth your evenings. These are the ones.
Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg — Festive Berlin's Cocktail Heartland
Mitte loses some of its summer visitors in December and gets better for it. The bars here that were interesting year-round become genuinely excellent in the festive season, when the locals reclaim them and the cocktail lists shift to reflect the weather.
01
Buck & Breck
Mitte
$$$
Intimate / Reservation Only
Fourteen seats, no sign on the door, and one of the best cocktail programmes in Berlin. Buck and Breck operates as a reservation-only bar — you book your slot, you arrive, and you sit at one of the most considered bar counters in Europe. The December menu has been running in some form since the bar opened in 2012 and features warming spirits, aged rum and cognac preparations, and a hot cocktail section that other Berlin bars have spent years trying to replicate. Book four weeks ahead in December.
Order: The hot buttered rum variant — Appleton 12, butter-washed, with house-made baking spice syrup
02
Rum Trader
Charlottenburg
$$
Classic / Rum Specialist
West Berlin's most important bar and one of the oldest cocktail bars in Germany, operating since 1974 in a room that has barely changed since it opened. The Rum Trader stocks over 160 rums — from young agricoles to forty-year-old Jamaican expressions — and the bar team knows them better than anyone in the city. In December the bar adds a mulled rum programme that features three seasonal preparations. The owner Gregor Scholl is usually behind the bar on weekday evenings and worth talking to.
Order: El Dorado 25 Year neat — one of the greatest rum expressions in production, served correctly here
03
Ora
Prenzlauer Berg
$$
Wine Bar / Cosy
A wine bar in a converted pharmacy — the original shelving now holds bottles rather than medicines, which is an improvement most would agree with. Ora is Prenzlauer Berg at its most comfortable: considered wine list, honest prices, genuinely warm room, and a regular clientele who treat it as their living room during December. The festive season brings a German wine focus alongside the usual European selection, including several producers from the Mosel and Rheingau who make wines worth knowing about.
Order: Mosel Riesling Spätlese by the glass — they rotate producers monthly in winter

Kreuzberg and Neukölln — Berlin's Festive Season Neighbourhood Bars
Kreuzberg and Neukölln do the festive season on their own terms — less Christmas market, more neighbourhood bar with the heaters on. The bars here are cheaper, less formal, and frequently more interesting than their Mitte counterparts.
04
Luzia
Kreuzberg
$
Neighbourhood / Late Night
One of Kreuzberg's most enduring neighbourhood bars, operating from a corner position on Oranienstrasse with a curved bar and enough seats to accommodate the regulars who arrive before 9pm and stay until 3am. Luzia does not do seasonal cocktail menus — it does cheap, well-made drinks and a room that manages to feel both intimate and social at the same time. In December the fairy lights go up, the Glühwein appears on the menu, and the bar becomes exactly what a winter neighbourhood bar should be.
Order: House Glühwein — red wine with mulling spices they prep fresh daily
05
Würgeengel
Kreuzberg
$$
Classic / Art Deco
A 1930s-style bar that earns the aesthetic with a genuinely considered cocktail programme. Würgeengel has been one of Kreuzberg's best bars since the 1990s and has outlasted trends by staying committed to classic cocktails made well. The December menu adds a seasonal layer — spiced Negroni variations, warming Boulevardiers, hot toddies with German whisky — without abandoning the classics that built the reputation. The room is dark, tall-ceilinged, and exactly right for a December evening.
Order: The spiced Negroni with house-made allspice tincture — a December exclusive
06
Tier
Neukölln
$
Dive / Natural Wine
Neukölln's best natural wine bar doubles as a seriously good neighbourhood bar during the festive season. Tier has a wine list that rotates constantly — mostly German, Austrian, and Italian producers who work with minimal intervention — and serves it in a room that feels like a very well-curated friend's flat. December brings a regular slot of live acoustic music on Sunday afternoons and an expanded selection of warming German digestifs. The prices are some of the fairest in Berlin for the quality on offer.
Order: Orange Silvaner from Franken — the house recommendation in December and correctly so

The Hidden Bars Worth Finding in Festive Berlin
Berlin's best hidden bars are more accessible in winter — fewer people know about them, and those who do are the regulars rather than the guided tour crowd. These are the bars our editors return to every December.
07
Stagger Lee
Schöneberg
$$
Americana / Whisky Bar
An American-themed whisky bar in Schöneberg that has been operating since 2010 with a commitment to American whiskey — bourbon, rye, and Tennessee — that makes most European whisky bars look casual. Stagger Lee stocks over two hundred American whiskeys and serves them alongside a cocktail list built on the same foundation. In December the bar runs a daily happy hour from 5pm to 7pm featuring classic Manhattans at 40 per cent of the standard price. One of the better-kept secrets in the city.
Order: The Manhattan with Rittenhouse Rye and Carpano Antica — exactly what it should be
08
Hops & Barley
Friedrichshain
$
Brewery / Beer Hall
Berlin's most consistently excellent small brewery, operating from Friedrichshain with a range of beers that would hold their own against any craft producer in Germany. Hops and Barley brews everything on site — the Dunkel is particularly good in December, the kind of dark, malty lager that makes winter feel manageable. The bar sits in a converted butcher shop with the original tiled walls intact, which adds a layer of atmosphere that no amount of interior design can manufacture. Cash only.
Order: The house Dunkel — dark and malty with a finish that lingers appropriately
09
Becketts Kopf
Prenzlauer Berg
$$$
Literary / Cocktail Bar
A bar with a Samuel Beckett portrait behind the bar and a cocktail programme that takes the literary connection seriously rather than using it as wallpaper. Becketts Kopf operates from a dim, book-lined room in Prenzlauer Berg with an atmosphere that makes extended evenings feel productive rather than idle. The December cocktail menu features drinks named for writers who spent time in Berlin — each one with a brief annotation explaining the connection. Small, seasonal, and worth the effort of finding it.
Order: The Christopher Isherwood — gin, Lillet, house-infused apricot brandy, and lemon oil

Our Verdict on Festive Season Drinking in Berlin
Berlin in December rewards those who resist the Christmas market circuit and look instead at what the bars are doing with the season. The city's best festive season bars are the ones that have adapted their programmes deliberately — darker spirits, warming preparations, seasonal menus that make sense — rather than simply adding fairy lights and calling it festive.
Our itinerary recommendation: start in Prenzlauer Berg or Charlottenburg for the early evening, move to Kreuzberg for the middle hours, and end in Neukölln or Friedrichshain if you want to stay out past midnight without the price tag of the central neighbourhoods. If you are planning your visit around December 31st, our dedicated guide to the best bars for New Year's Eve in Berlin covers the specific venues and logistics for Silvester.
