Amsterdam's live music bars amsterdam scene benefits enormously from the city's compact geography: 9 of the 10 venues on this list are reachable from each other within 20 minutes by bike. The city has a deep jazz tradition, a serious blues circuit, and a growing experimental music scene concentrated in the Noord and Oost neighbourhoods. We have spent many evenings mapping this. Here is what we found.
Leidseplein and the Centre: Live Music Bars Amsterdam at the Core
Leidseplein's concentration of music venues makes it Amsterdam's most efficient starting point for a live music evening. You can cover three bars within a 200-metre radius, which allows for a progressive evening without committing to a single programme all night.
01
Bimhuis
Eastern Docks
$$
Jazz / Experimental / World-Class
Amsterdam's most important jazz venue occupies a purpose-built waterfront building on the IJ near Centraal Station and books an international programme of jazz and improvised music that competes with anything in Berlin or London. The 175-seat main hall has exceptional acoustics and the bar operates before shows and at interval. The monthly free Tuesday late-night sessions are where Amsterdam's working musicians come to play for each other.
Order: Dutch gin or a craft beer from the Bimhuis bar. Keep it straightforward here.
02
Melkweg
Leidseplein
$$
Multi-Room Venue / Bar
The Milky Way has been Amsterdam's flagship mixed-use music venue since 1970 and still programmes with more ambition than venues twice its budget in other cities. Three stages, a gallery, a cinema, and a bar that operates independently from whichever shows are running. The main hall capacity is 1,500 but the smaller Sugar Factory side stage is where the most interesting acts often end up. Check the weekly programme rather than walking in blind.
Order: Draft Heineken or one of the rotating Dutch craft beers. The bar is built for volume.
03
Paradiso
Leidseplein
$$
Historic Venue / Multi-Genre
A former church that has been Amsterdam's pre-eminent live music venue since 1968, where the Rolling Stones and Nirvana both played. The main hall holds 1,500 under gothic arches and the bar operates on the mezzanine level with excellent sightlines. The small hall upstairs books emerging acts at half the entrance price of the main stage. Membership (annual fee) gives priority booking and reduced entry to all shows.
Order: Beer in a plastic cup. This is the Paradiso tradition and you should honour it.

The Jordaan and Canal Ring: Live Music Amsterdam at Its Most Intimate
The Jordaan's brown cafes host some of Amsterdam's most honest live music: local musicians playing to local audiences in rooms that have not been redesigned since the 1970s. These are the venues that understand what live music in a bar should feel like when it is not being staged for anyone in particular.
04
Cafe Alto
Leidseplein
$$
Jazz Bar / Nightly
A Korte Leidsedwarsstraat basement bar that has hosted live jazz every single night since 1952. The room holds 40. The musicians arrive at 22:00 and play until 03:00. No cover charge. The bartenders are long-serving and efficient. Cafe Alto is not trying to be Amsterdam's best jazz bar. It is simply the most reliable one and has been for 70 years.
Order: Jenever or Heineken. Order again at 23:00 and you are set for the evening.
05
De Nieuwe Anita
Jordaan
$
Neighbourhood Bar / Indie / Folk
A Frederik Hendrikstraat bar that doubles as an independent cinema and occasional music venue in the back room. The front bar is open daily from 17:00 and has the most reliably pleasant atmosphere in the western Jordaan. Live music when it runs covers indie, folk, and experimental acoustic acts booked by the bar staff themselves. The drinks are cheap, the crowd is local, and the commitment to programming interesting acts without charging for it is admirable.
Order: Draft beer or a glass of house wine. De Nieuwe Anita is not a cocktail destination.
06
Jazz Cafe Bourbon Street
Leidseplein
$
Blues / Jazz / No Cover
A Leidsekruisstraat bar that runs live blues and jazz seven nights a week without a cover charge and with some of Amsterdam's most consistent live music programming. The room is small, the acoustics are accidental rather than designed, and the musicians are working professionals who play here because they enjoy it. The Bourbon connection is conceptual rather than geographic but the American whisky selection is genuinely the best in this stretch of the city.
Order: Bourbon on the rocks or a simple bourbon and ginger. The bar is built for it.

Noord, Oost, and the Waterfront: Amsterdam Live Music Bars Beyond the Centre
Amsterdam Noord and the eastern harbours have developed the most interesting alternative music scene in the city over the past decade. These venues operate in converted industrial spaces and programme with a freedom that central Amsterdam's real estate prices make impossible.
07
NDSM Werf
Amsterdam Noord
$$
Warehouse Venue / Bar / Summer
A shipyard turned arts complex on the IJ's north bank that hosts Amsterdam's most eclectic summer live music programme from May through September. Multiple bars, outdoor stages, and a free ferry from Centraal Station make it the most logistically accessible alternative venue in the city. The programming covers everything from electronic and jazz to folk and experimental with no genre loyalty. Best on warm evenings when the IJ looks at its most cinematic.
Order: Whatever craft beer is on the outdoor tap. Brouwerij 't IJ products feature prominently here.
08
OT301
Oud-West
$
Squat Venue / Bar / Experimental
A legalized squat on Overtoom that has been Amsterdam's most committed alternative culture venue since 1999. The programming covers experimental music, jazz, electronic, and noise across a weekly schedule that changes entirely each month. The bar runs on a donation model that keeps prices below anything comparable in the city. For evenings that prioritise genuinely unusual music over comfort or predictability.
Order: Whatever is cheapest. OT301's prices are some of the lowest in Amsterdam's live music scene.
09
Shelter Amsterdam
Amsterdam Noord
$$
Underground Bar / Electronic / Live Acts
In the basement under the A'DAM Tower across the IJ from Centraal, Shelter runs Amsterdam's most respected electronic music club and a bar that is open independently from show nights. Live electronic acts play the intimate basement room on Thursday evenings before the weekend DJ programme begins. The bar is well stocked and the sound system is the best in any Amsterdam venue below ground.
Order: Craft beer from the bar selection or a simple cocktail. The bar supports the music, not vice versa.
10
Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ
Eastern Docks
$$$
Concert Hall Bar / Adjacent to Bimhuis
The contemporary music hall adjacent to Bimhuis has one of the best waterfront bars in Amsterdam operating independently from the concert programme. The panoramic IJ view from the first-floor bar is a destination in itself on clear evenings. The programme covers contemporary classical and experimental music. The bar runs a full cocktail list and a wine selection that is notably better than what concert halls usually attempt.
Order: The house gin tonic with Ketel One and Mediterranean tonic. The view makes it better.

Our Verdict on Live Music Bars in Amsterdam
Bimhuis and Cafe Alto represent the two poles of Amsterdam's live music bar scene: the world-class purpose-built venue and the neighbourhood bar where the music has been running every night for 70 years without interruption. Both are essential. For something between these extremes, Paradiso and Melkweg cover the city's broad musical middle ground with programmes that are reliably interesting regardless of which night you arrive.
For evenings that want something more experimental, the Noord venues accessible by ferry from Centraal produce the most genuinely surprising programming in the city. Plan your evening around the Bimhuis or Paradiso programme and add Cafe Alto for a no-cover jazz nightcap. That combination delivers an Amsterdam live music evening that is hard to improve on.
