The Perfect One Night in London Bars

One night in London bars, planned correctly, compresses the best of one of the world's most varied bar scenes into a single evening. The density of genuine quality across Soho, Shoreditch, and Dalston is extraordinary — different in character from New York, different again from Berlin, and entirely itself.

6 pm to 8 pm: Start in Soho

Soho at 6 pm is the correct place to start an evening in London bars. The neighbourhood is small enough to walk between venues and the cocktail quality in a two-block radius of Frith Street is unmatched anywhere in the city.

01
Nightjar

A basement speakeasy near Old Street that has been one of the best cocktail bars in London for fifteen years. The Prohibition-era menu is designed around pre-Prohibition, Prohibition, and post-war cocktails, each section distinct and considered. Reserve well in advance — this is not a walk-in venue.

Order: Ask for the Prohibition-era section and let the bartender choose for you
02
Lyaness

Ryan Chetiyawardana's bar at Sea Containers London, with one of the most thoughtfully constructed cocktail menus in Europe. Every ingredient has been made in-house or sourced with genuine intent. The river views from the terrace are worth the trip alone. Arrive at 6 for a window seat.

Order: The current seasonal feature cocktail — they change regularly and are always the best thing on the menu
03
Artesian

The bar at the Langham Hotel, multiple times named the best bar in the world. The team here is consistently exceptional. If you have one night to spend in a London bar and budget is not the concern, this is where we recommend. The service alone is an education.

Order: The signature Artesian cocktail — it changes seasonally and demonstrates the team's current thinking
04
The Blind Pig

Accessed through Social Eating House on Poland Street. The small bar upstairs is one of the best-kept secrets in Soho for people who actually live there. The cocktail programme is serious without being theatrical. Book ahead or arrive when they open.

Order: The weekly special — the bar changes this every Monday and it is always worth trying

8 pm to 10 pm: Move East to Shoreditch

After Soho, the correct move is east. Shoreditch and Dalston have a completely different energy — more experimental, less self-conscious about its own quality — and the bar density is extraordinary.

05
Satan's Whiskers

A small, unpretentious cocktail bar on the Bethnal Green Road that has been doing things right since 2012. The menu is handwritten and changes weekly. The crowd is local and the prices are fair. This is what most cocktail bars aspire to be — a proper neighbourhood place with exceptional drinks.

Order: Ask the bartender what they are most excited about this week. They will tell you honestly.
06
Happiness Forgets

A basement bar on Hoxton Square that does no marketing, no social media, and no reservations. It fills up because the cocktails are genuinely outstanding and word of mouth has done the rest for twelve years. Arrive before 8:30 pm or wait. The wait is worth it.

Order: The Mezcal Negroni variation — they do this better than anywhere else in London
07
Evans & Peel Detective Agency

Technically in West London but worth including because the concept has been executed with genuine commitment. Enter as a client seeking the detective's help, descend to the bar. The cocktail programme is strong and the room is unique. Best on a weeknight when the immersive element has more room to breathe.

Order: Let them build you something based on your brief — they take it seriously
08
Cahoots

A 1940s London Underground carriage turned cocktail bar in a Soho basement. The concept could easily be gimmicky but the cocktails are good enough to justify the visit on their own. The staff are in period costume and the music is era-appropriate. Book ahead on weekends.

Order: The Victory Gin Fizz — served in a vintage tin cup

Verdict: One night in London bars is best spent moving east as the evening progresses. Start in Soho for quality and convenience, move to Shoreditch or Bethnal Green for honesty and price, and end somewhere that you would not have found without a recommendation. The bars that do not advertise themselves are almost always the best ones.
