Our Picks

Drumbar rooftop Chicago Raffaello Hotel Streeterville
Rooftop
$$$$
Drumbar
Streeterville · Raffaello Hotel, 18th Floor
At 18 floors above Streeterville, Drumbar has the finest east-facing views of any Chicago rooftop bar — clear evenings reveal the full expanse of Lake Michigan stretching to the horizon. The cocktail list is small, intentional, and excellent. Heated firepits extend the outdoor season well into November. Dress code after 9pm; arrive between 5pm and 7pm for the quietest experience with the best light. Part of our top picks for after-work drinks in Chicago.
The Roof on theWit Chicago State Street skyline bar
Rooftop
$$$
The Roof on theWit
The Loop · State Street
Perched 27 floors above State Street on top of theWit hotel, The Roof delivers an uninterrupted 360-degree view of Chicago's architectural skyline that no other rooftop bar can match. The design is sleek rather than cozy — white furniture, ambient lighting, and a cocktail menu built for a crowd that dresses well. Heaters and fire features mean this bar operates into late autumn.
London House Chicago Rooftop Michigan Avenue bar
Rooftop
$$$
LH Rooftop at London House
Michigan Avenue · Near North
Three floors of terraced rooftop space atop the London House hotel, positioned at the foot of the Michigan Avenue bridge. The view takes in the Chicago River, the iconic wriggling blue of the water flanked by skyscrapers, and the Tribune Tower directly across the street. One of the few Chicago rooftops where the river view is the main event. Brunch service on weekends is worth planning around.
Raised bar Chicago rooftop InterContinental hotel
Rooftop
$$$$
Raised
Magnificent Mile · InterContinental Hotel
Raised occupies the top of the InterContinental hotel on the Magnificent Mile, giving it a commanding north-south view of Michigan Avenue that is genuinely impressive after dark. The cocktail list is hotel-bar conventional but executed well. This is the option to choose when impressing someone who has not been to Chicago before — the view does the work. Pricing is on the higher end but the location justifies it.
Mordecai rooftop bar Wrigleyville Chicago north side
Rooftop
$$$
Mordecai
Wrigleyville · North Side
The North Side's answer to downtown rooftop excess — smaller, less formal, and significantly more local-feeling than the hotel bars on Michigan Avenue. Mordecai's rooftop catches the lake breeze on summer evenings and serves a creative cocktail menu that rotates quarterly. Cubs game days bring a very different crowd than weekday evenings; both experiences are worth having at least once.
Nando Milano rooftop bar Chicago West Loop
Rooftop
$$$
Nando Milano Trattoria Rooftop
West Loop
The West Loop's best-kept rooftop, accessed through an Italian restaurant that gives the whole operation an intimate, slightly private feel. The aperitivo hour between 5pm and 7pm serves Campari-based drinks at prices that feel like Milan circa 2015. The rooftop capacity is small — 40 seats maximum — which keeps it genuinely pleasant on evenings when every other Chicago rooftop is standing-room-only.
Offshore bar Chicago Navy Pier rooftop
Rooftop
$$
Offshore
Navy Pier
Offshore is technically a floating bar and rooftop simultaneously — the multi-level structure at Navy Pier extends over the lake and offers some of the most unusual drinking angles in Chicago. The crowd is tourist-heavy in summer but the lake views from the upper deck at sunset are genuinely spectacular. Pricing is reasonable for the location. Best visited on a Tuesday or Wednesday when the pier foot traffic drops.
Federales rooftop bar Chicago River North tequila
Rooftop
$$
Federales
River North
A tequila and mezcal bar with a substantial rooftop terrace that brings energy rather than sophistication. Federales is the rooftop you choose when you want to actually have fun rather than sit quietly with a glass of something minimal. The frozen margaritas are the best in River North. Lines form on Friday and Saturday from 9pm; arrive before 7pm to get in without waiting.
Pilsen Yards rooftop Chicago south side craft bar
Rooftop
$$
Pilsen Yards
Pilsen · South Side
The most neighbourhood-rooftop on the list — Pilsen Yards is embedded in a creative district that feels nothing like River North. The view is industrial rather than architectural, but the vibe is relaxed and the beer selection is outstanding. Local craft labels rotate weekly. Bring cash for the fastest service. This is the bar for people who want to drink on a rooftop without feeling like they are in a hotel commercial.
Proxi rooftop West Loop Chicago cocktail terrace
Rooftop
$$$
Proxi Rooftop Terrace
West Loop
Atop the Ace Hotel West Loop, Proxi's rooftop terrace captures the energy of the restaurant below but filters it through something more ambient. The cocktail program leans global — expect flavours from Southeast Asia and Latin America working their way into familiar formats. The terrace has a retractable roof system that keeps the space operational in light rain and cold autumn evenings.
Streeterville Social rooftop bar Chicago Loews Hotel
Rooftop
$$$
Streeterville Social
Streeterville · Loews Hotel
A summer-only rooftop with lawn games, fire pits, and cocktails that do not try too hard — and are better for it. Streeterville Social is the anti-pretentious rooftop option: arrive in jeans, drink a frozen bourbon lemonade, and play a round of bocce while Lake Michigan glints in the distance. Closes for the season in mid-October. One of the best date night settings in Chicago during summer.
E2 Wine Bar rooftop Chicago Lincoln Park
Rooftop
$$
E2 Wine Bar
Lincoln Park
Lincoln Park's rooftop wine bar is unpretentious and neighbourhood-focused — the antithesis of the hotel rooftops downtown. E2 rotates its list of 60 wines by the glass seasonally and pours them without ceremony or attitude. The rooftop terrace is small and intimate. Best on a Thursday evening when the post-work Lincoln Park crowd arrives and the wine list gets properly worked through.
By Area

By Neighbourhood

The Loop
Cindy's · The Roof on theWit
The highest concentration of serious rooftop bars in Chicago, anchored by the hotel towers that define the skyline. Cindy's at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel is the benchmark. Book at least a week ahead for weekend sunset slots from June through September.
Streeterville & Near North
Drumbar · Raised · Streeterville Social
Three very different rooftop personalities within 10 minutes of each other: Drumbar for serious cocktails and lake views, Raised for Michigan Avenue spectacle, and Streeterville Social for a genuinely relaxed outdoor experience. The neighbourhood anchors Chicago's best rooftop corridor.
River North
LH Rooftop · Federales
River North rooftops split between the elevated hotel terraces with architectural views and the louder, more social bars that attract the Friday night crowd. The London House rooftop at the Michigan Avenue bridge delivers both views and food worth ordering.
West Loop
Nando Milano Rooftop · Proxi Rooftop
The West Loop's rooftop scene is newer and more intimate than downtown. Both options here are attached to serious restaurants, giving them food menus that stand independently of the drinks. Less crowded than River North equivalents on any given Friday.
North Side
Mordecai · E2 Wine Bar
For a rooftop experience that feels genuinely local rather than tourist-destination, the North Side options in Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park are the right answer. Mordecai in particular delivers a neighbourhood rooftop that has no equivalent in the hotel corridor.
Pilsen
Pilsen Yards
The city's best rooftop for craft beer outside the tourist circuit. Pilsen Yards draws locals and is worth the Pink Line commute from downtown. Industrial views, good light in the evening, and a beer selection that changes faster than any hotel bar can manage.
Editor's Note

What Makes a Great Rooftop Bar in Chicago?

Chicago's skyline is one of the world's finest architectural spectacles, and rooftop bars are one of the best ways to experience it. The question is not whether the view is good — most of them are — but what the bar does with it. The best Chicago rooftops treat the view as a backdrop, not a substitute for quality drinks and genuine hospitality. The worst ones charge $24 for a middling margarita and a view they did nothing to earn.

The season matters enormously here. Chicago rooftop culture runs from May through October with intensity, and from November through April in heated or enclosed spaces only. Drumbar and The Roof on theWit both operate year-round with heat infrastructure. The summer-only options like Streeterville Social and Offshore are worth visiting specifically because they disappear for 6 months — there is a welcome urgency to a Chicago summer rooftop that cities with mild climates simply do not have.

For groups, book ahead wherever possible. Cindy's fills by 6:30pm on any Friday without a reservation. The Roof on theWit requires reservations for parties of four or more from June through August. For a solo drink or a date night, the bar seating at Drumbar or LH Rooftop is typically available on a walk-in basis on weekdays. For more romantic options, our date night bar guide for Chicago covers rooftop options alongside indoor alternatives.
