By Neighbourhood

Montrose

Houston's most diverse neighbourhood hosts its most serious drinking culture. The stretch of Westheimer Road through Montrose concentrates more James Beard-nominated bar programs per mile than any comparable American block. Anvil Bar and Refuge anchors the western end; the eastern blocks reward exploration on foot.

Midtown

Midtown is where Houston does its most concentrated after-work and late-night drinking. The streets around Main and Brazos pulse from Thursday through Saturday with a crowd that moves between dozens of bars within a walkable grid. The METRO rail stops here make it unusually easy to get in and out without driving. Our Houston after work bars guide covers the best Midtown destinations from 5pm onwards, and the Houston sports bars page maps out where to watch the Texans and Astros across the neighborhood.

EaDo (East Downtown)

East Downtown's warehouse conversion produced Houston's most interesting emerging bar scene. Breweries, cocktail rooms, and late-night dive bars share blocks with the city's best live music venues. 8th Wonder Brewery is the neighbourhood anchor but the surrounding streets now justify a dedicated visit on a weekend.

Downtown

Downtown Houston's historic buildings house some of Texas's most impressive bar programs. La Carafe in the 1866 building on Congress Avenue is the city's oldest bar and still earns its reputation. The area fills significantly on Rockets and Astros game nights — arrive two hours before tip-off for a decent seat.

Washington Avenue

Washington Avenue runs a long strip of bars catering to Houston's working professional crowd for after-work drinking that regularly extends past midnight. The density here means you can walk the entire avenue in an evening without finishing your night in the same bar you started. Weekend prices run higher than midweek.

Heights

The Heights neighbourhood carries Houston's best neighbourhood bar culture — independent craft beer taprooms, wine bars, and cocktail rooms that have been building a local following rather than chasing foot traffic. The atmosphere on a Wednesday evening when regulars are in is the most authentic bar experience the city offers.
