50 bars across 6 neighbourhoods, organised by occasion. From Bosphorus-view rooftops in Karaköy to the meyhane wine bars of Beyoglu where Istanbul's bar culture was born.
Istanbul's bar scene is built on raki and the meyhane tradition, but the city's cocktail culture has developed with extraordinary speed since 2012. The Bosphorus views from the rooftop bars of Karaköy and Beyoglu are among the most dramatic in the world. The city that bridges two continents also bridges two centuries of drinking culture in a single evening.
The historic entertainment district on the European side contains the city's highest concentration of bars, from traditional meyhane wine taverns on the Cicek Pasaji side streets to the rooftop cocktail lounges of the hotel district. Istiklal Caddesi is the tourist artery, but the streets parallel to it contain the bars that Beyoglu residents actually use. The live music scene here has no equal in Turkey.
The regenerated port district below the Galata Bridge has become Istanbul's most creative bar neighbourhood in the past decade. The converted warehouses and 19th-century commercial buildings contain 18 of the city's 50 listed bars, ranging from craft beer taprooms to technically serious cocktail rooms. The ferry terminal connection means it draws a cross-city crowd that no other neighbourhood can claim.
The hillside neighbourhood above Beyoglu, favoured by artists, writers, and the city's media class, has a bar scene that matches its intellectual reputation. The cocktail bars here are smaller, more opinionated, and more likely to serve something you have never encountered elsewhere. Several of Istanbul's best hidden gem bars are accessible only to those who know which bell to ring and which stairs to climb.
The tower neighbourhood connecting Beyoglu to Karaköy has developed a distinct bar identity based around jazz, wine, and the creative industries that have colonised the surrounding streets. The bars here are quieter than Beyoglu, more focused on conversation, and run later than you might expect from the neighbourhood's daytime character. The jazz venues here are the most serious in the city.
The Asian side neighbourhood, 20 minutes by ferry from Eminonu, has developed a bar scene that intentionally contrasts with the European side's tourist pressure. Prices are lower, crowds are more local, and the craft beer scene that has developed around the Moda waterfront is more adventurous than anything on the other side of the strait. The ferry ride is worth scheduling into the evening.
The football neighbourhood on the European shore of the Bosphorus builds its bar identity around Besiktas JK and the sports bars that cluster around the Vodafone Park. On match days the entire area becomes a single continuous bar experience. Outside match days, the waterfront bars along the Besiktas shoreline offer some of the best Bosphorus views in the city at accessible price points.
