Craft Beer in Tokyo: A New Tradition

Japan's craft beer revolution began in 1994 when deregulation allowed microbreweries to operate for the first time since the post-war consolidation. Before that year, brewing in Japan was controlled by four major companies with essentially no opportunity for independent producers. The deregulation changed everything.

Japanese craft beer differs from Western styles in several ways. Brewers tend to emphasize balance and drinkability over extreme hoppiness or alcohol content. The Japanese palate developed through decades of consuming lager has influenced craft brewers to make beers that appeal to that sensibility. This means IPAs are often less aggressive, and lagers receive as much craft attention as ales.

Spring Valley Brewery in Daikanyama represents the Kirin company's entry into craft beer. Their flagship 496 is a well-crafted pale ale that balances approachability with interesting flavour. Yanaka Beer Hall represents the community model where a neighbourhood supports a brewery by providing social infrastructure around the product.

The distinction between Tokyo craft beer bars matters. Some focus on Japanese breweries exclusively, treating the movement as distinctly Japanese. Others mix global craft beer with Japanese selections, acknowledging that craft beer is an international conversation. Both approaches produce excellent venues.

Budget expectations are low by craft beer standards. Most bars charge 700 to 1,200 yen per beer. This makes craft beer more accessible in Tokyo than in most cities globally.
