The Chicago Jazz Pub That Capone Drank In
Green Mill has been operating in Uptown since 1907 and remains one of the most heritage jazz venues in America. The room is preserved Victorian: original mahogany bar, leather banquettes, low warm lighting, and a small stage at the back. Al Capone drank here in the 1920s — his preferred booth is still pointed out.
The cocktails are unfussy. Order a beer or a basic mixed drink. The room is the destination, not the cocktail programme. The jazz starts at 21:00 most nights and runs until close. Sunday night Uptown Poetry Slam has been running since 1986.
The crowd is jazz enthusiasts, heritage tourists, and Chicago locals committed to the room. Pair with the live music bar tradition if you want comparable American jazz history elsewhere.
