Birra Più

Craft Beer Pigneto $$ By Morten Andersen

Birra Più, written Birra+, holds a corner of Via del Pigneto, the pedestrian heart of Rome's Pigneto nightlife district east of the city centre. It opened in 2009 and, by its own account and Punch's, was the first bar in Rome built around canned craft beer. The pitch is a serious beer list in a loose, rock-leaning room rather than a polished cocktail bar.

The room

The walls carry beer memorabilia top to bottom, including a Pliny the Elder sign that regulars point out, set to a rock and punk soundtrack. It reads as a neighbourhood beer bar rather than a designed taproom, easy for conversation and a long session. The crowd is local and lively, and the corner spills onto the Pigneto strip on warm nights.

Pigneto is Rome's best-known nightlife quarter east of the centre, a pedestrian run of bars and trattorias built on a former working-class grid. Birra Più holds a corner of it and shares the street's loose, late energy. The rock-bar mood is the draw for regulars who want beer depth without a formal taproom.

What to order

The line-up runs to 12 taps plus a cask and two fridges, one leaning Italian bottles and one stocked with large sour bottles. Punch and local guides rate it among Rome's strongest beer selections, and the staff steer drinkers from ales to sours with ease. There is also a solid spirits shelf, with whisky the standout for anyone switching off beer.

The tap list rotates often, so the right move is to ask what is fresh rather than read the whole board. The Italian fridge is the place to find local brewers, while the sour bottles suit a table splitting larger formats. A guided flight from ale to sour is the way to use the range.

Who it is for

Birra Più fits a beer drinker after range and guidance, a group settling into a Pigneto night, and anyone who rates a knowledgeable bar over a slick one. Skip it for a quiet date or a wine-led evening, since the room is loud and beer-first. It rewards drinkers who ask the bar what is on and let them build a flight.

Best time to go

Opening runs from 5pm, to 1am on weeknights and 2am on Friday and Saturday, so an early seat beats the late Pigneto rush. The taps rotate often, which makes a return visit worthwhile for whatever has just landed. Warm evenings on the pedestrian street are the move, when the district is at its busiest.

Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights, when the Pigneto strip fills and the bar runs to 2am. An earlier weeknight visit buys a seat and the staff's time to talk through the list. Warmer months are best, when the corner opens onto the street and the district is at full tilt.

The detail worth knowing

The can-bar origin is the detail that matters, since Birra Più helped bring canned craft beer into Rome's drinking culture in 2009. A second, bottle-only outlet in Garbatella extended the project, but the Pigneto corner remains the bar to sit in. Its long run on Rome craft-beer guides marks it as a fixture rather than a passing opening.

Being first with cans gave the bar an early reputation among Rome's beer drinkers that it has held since. The Garbatella shop serves takeaway bottles, but the original corner is where the taps and the crowd are. More than fifteen years on, it remains a default name on the city's craft-beer map.

The bottom line

Birra Più is Pigneto's craft beer corner, a 2009 pioneer with 12 taps, a cask, a deep bottle and can list and a rock-bar mood. Come after 5pm, ask the bar what is on, and build a flight from ale to sour. It is a beer-first room in Rome's liveliest nightlife district, and the list is the reason to stay.
