The Best Bars for a Birthday Celebration

A birthday bar needs to deliver on multiple fronts simultaneously: the celebrant needs to feel like the venue was chosen specifically for them, the drinks need to be worth the round price, and the room needs to handle anywhere from 6 to 20 people without fragmenting the group into separate conversations on different floors. We have tested these bars for exactly those criteria across New York and London.

Birthday Bars in New York

New York's best bars for a birthday combine something memorable with practicality. Either a rooftop that impresses the people who have never been, or a private area that keeps the group together, or a cocktail program good enough that everyone drinks well regardless of their usual preferences.

01
230 Fifth Rooftop Bar

The Empire State Building from the rooftop of 230 Fifth is exactly the kind of New York moment that makes a birthday feel like a genuine event. The drinks are competent rather than exceptional, but the experience is hard to argue with for a group arriving from out of town or for people who want the skyline to do the talking. Go at dusk for the best of both the lit city and the darkening sky above it.

Order: Champagne or a straightforward cocktail, let the view carry it

02
The Penrose

A proper neighbourhood bar on the Upper East Side that handles birthday groups well without making anyone feel managed. The back section accommodates 12 to 15 comfortably. The cocktail list is competent across the board, the beer selection is thoughtful, and the staff are experienced with celebrations without being performatively enthusiastic about it. Reliable in a way that matters when the stakes are real.

Order: The Penrose Punch for the table

03
Employees Only

The West Village speakeasy that helped define New York's modern cocktail era remains one of the best birthday venues in the city. The team here are skilled entertainers as much as bartenders. The kitchen runs until 4am which solves the inevitable birthday-night hunger problem. Their punch bowls for groups are excellent. Book the back section in advance for a party of 8 or more.

Order: The Mata Hari, or any of their barrel-aged cocktails

04
The Roof at Park South

Smaller and less crowded than 230 Fifth, the Park South rooftop rewards groups who want a more manageable experience with the same Manhattan elevation. The cocktail program runs higher than you'd expect from a hotel rooftop. Private buyout options available for groups over 30. The outdoor fire pits extend the season into October and make it considerably more atmospheric than the average summer rooftop.

Order: Seasonal spritz and a whiskey sour to compare

05
The Up and Up

A serious cocktail bar in a below-street-level space that manages to feel festive without trying. The menu changes with the seasons and the bartenders are genuinely interested in what you want. For a birthday with guests who care about what they're drinking, this is the right call. For a birthday with guests who want a party atmosphere over a drinks experience, go elsewhere.

Order: Ask for the current bartender's favourite off-menu build

Birthday Bars in London

London's birthday bar scene is one of the best in Europe for variety. The cocktail bar scene has matured significantly, and the rooftop options have expanded every year. These 5 bars cover the full range of what a birthday celebration might need.

06
Skylight Battersea

A seasonal rooftop operation in a converted Battersea warehouse that handles large birthday groups better than most London venues. The capacity is generous, the pricing is honest, and the activity programming (cinema, mini golf, fire pits) means the group has something to do if the pure bar experience needs supplementing. Open May through October. Book well ahead for weekend evenings.

Order: Cocktail jugs for the table, they are built for groups

07
Dandelyan (now Lyaness)

Now operating as Lyaness, Ryan Chetiyawardana's South Bank bar remains one of the finest birthday venues in London for groups who want to be genuinely impressed. The views over the Thames are reliable. The cocktails are among the most creative in the city. Private reservation sections available for groups of 8 and above. Worth every penny for the right celebration.

Order: Current menu's signature and the house Champagne

08
Cahoots

A 1940s London Underground-themed bar in a converted tube station tunnel in Soho. The concept sounds like it should wear thin quickly and it never does. The production quality is genuine and the cocktail program matches the aesthetic. Birthday groups love the period-specific experience and the staff are trained specifically for large celebrations. Private hire packages available. Book the carriage section for groups of 10 to 20.

Order: Victory Collins or the Cahoots Cooler, both built for the setting

09
The Punch Room

The Edition hotel's intimate punch bar seats around 30, making it ideal for mid-size birthday groups who want something genuinely special. The punches are historically researched and genuinely excellent. The room itself is beautiful in a restrained way. Staff will create a bespoke punch for a group occasion if given enough notice. The experience feels distinctly private even when the room is full.

Order: Request the seasonal birthday punch, it exists if you ask

10
Aqua Nueva

A central London rooftop that works for birthday groups who want easy access from across the city. The cocktail list is reliable and broad enough to satisfy everyone. The rooftop terrace has consistent capacity management that prevents the overcrowding that ruins other London rooftop venues. Closest tube is Oxford Circus, which simplifies logistics for groups assembling from different parts of the city.

Order: The house Sangria for the table, then cocktails individually

Our Verdict on Birthday Bars

The best birthday bars either deliver a memorable visual experience (rooftop, underground, theatrical setting) or a drinks program the group will actually talk about the next day. Ideally both. The 10 bars on this list cover every group size from 4 to 40 and every budget from honest to generous.

Employees Only and Cahoots both offer private hire packages and dedicated group service. For New York rooftop bars beyond this list, the broader category guide covers the best options across all five boroughs. Plan at least 2 weeks ahead for any Saturday reservation at a popular venue.
