The Best Sports Bars in Lisbon

Lisbon's sports bar culture centres on one of the most intense club rivalries in Europe. Benfica versus Sporting CP divides the city and defines the atmosphere in its bars. We have found the best sports bars in Lisbon that go beyond the Cais do Sodre expat strip — the places where Portuguese football is watched by people who care about the result and talk about it long after the final whistle.

The Best Sports Bars in Lisbon for Football

Lisbon's football culture is concentrated in the neighbourhood bars of Mouraria, Alfama, and Intendente for Benfica support, and in the Sporting-aligned bars of Marques de Pombal and Rato. The best sports bars in the city know which side they are on.

01
O Solar dos Presuntos Sports Bar

A Mouraria corner bar with Benfica flags on every surface and screens that show every match the Lisbon reds play. The neighbourhood crowd arrives early, argues through half-time, and stays until the analysis is done. Champions League nights here, when Benfica are involved, are among the best sports bar experiences in southern Europe. Cheap Super Bock, unreserved seating, arrive prepared.

Order: Super Bock on tap — the Benfica supporters' beer of choice

02
Tasca do Chico

A fado bar that doubles as a sports bar on match nights — an only-in-Lisbon combination that works better than it sounds. The screens go up for Primeira Liga fixtures and the atmosphere, already warm from the fado performances, becomes electric when Benfica score. Small, cash-only, and not suitable for large groups, but one of the most authentic football-watching experiences in the city.

Order: Sagres cerveja — the Portuguese football standard, cold and honest

03
Pavilhao Chines

Lisbon's most eclectic bar — a Victorian cabinet of curiosities packed with dolls, model soldiers, and vintage collectibles — that shows Primeira Liga and Champions League on screens positioned between the display cases. The combination is odd enough to be memorable. The billiard room in the back is used for overflow seating on big match nights. A genuinely one-of-a-kind sports bar experience.

Order: Ginjinha from the house bottle — Lisbon cherry liqueur, a tradition here

Sports Bars for International Fixtures in Lisbon

Lisbon's growing international population has created consistent demand for Premier League and other European football coverage that runs parallel to the Portuguese league. These are the bars that serve both communities well.

04
The Lisboan

A Cais do Sodre bar positioned at the intersection of the expat and Lisbon professional communities. Premier League, Champions League, Primeira Liga, and Six Nations are all shown across multiple screens. The atmosphere during Portugal national team matches here is exceptional — the local crowd that fills this bar on international nights is genuinely invested. Good beer selection, efficient service.

Order: NorteSul IPA — a Portuguese craft beer worth ordering here

05
O'Gilins Irish Pub

Lisbon's most established Irish bar, running since the 1990s and maintaining a comprehensive sports subscription across Premier League, Six Nations, GAA, and rugby union. The Baixa location is central, the bar staff know their regulars, and the service holds up on busy European nights. Opens early for morning fixtures. Our consistent recommendation for any British or Irish visitor needing sport coverage.

Order: Guinness on draught — properly kept, the best pint in Lisbon

06
Duque Brewpub

A Bairro Alto craft brewery that shows Champions League and Primeira Liga without abandoning its identity as a serious beer destination. The combination of eight house-brewed taps and a projector screen for major fixtures is well-executed. The crowd on a Champions League night is young, international, and knowledgeable about both football and beer. Book ahead for semifinal and final nights.

Order: Duque Pale Ale — house-brewed, light and refreshing

Neighbourhood Sports Bars in Lisbon

Lisbon's best sports bar culture is in its neighbourhood tasca bars and corner cafes, particularly in the areas beyond the tourist belt. These are the spots where Portuguese football is taken seriously and the beer is priced for locals.

07
Tasca da Esquina

A Campo de Ourique corner bar with the kind of regular football crowd that only neighbourhood bars develop over decades. The screens are good and the beer is cheap. The neighbourhood is residential and local — this is not a tourist bar. Watching Benfica vs Sporting here with regulars who have lived in the neighbourhood for 30 years is a Lisbon experience no hotel bar can provide.

Order: Super Bock Stout — dark lager, a winter favourite, excellent here

08
Bar das Imagens

An Intendente bar with an arts collective identity that shows football without apology. The screens come down for Champions League and national team fixtures and the crowd — young, creative, Lisbon-born — watches with the same intensity as any Mouraria bar. Cheaper than the tourist areas and genuinely atmospheric on a Selecao international night.

Order: Cerveja artesanal from the short tap list — ask what's on

09
Quiosque de Sao Paulo

A riverside kiosk bar that sets up an outdoor screen for major Portuguese football fixtures during warm months. Watching football beside the Tagus with a cold Sagres on a summer Champions League evening is a Lisbon-specific experience worth planning around. The screen setup is temporary but the atmosphere it creates is genuine. April through October only.

Order: Sagres preta — dark Portuguese lager, cold and appropriate outdoors

10
WIP Bar

A Santos bar popular with young Lisboetas and internationals that covers Primeira Liga, Champions League, Formula 1, and NBA. The terrace on warm evenings combined with a large indoor screen makes it one of the more comfortable watching environments in Lisbon. The beer list includes Portuguese craft options. Reservations are accepted and worth making for Champions League knockout rounds.

Order: Musa Cerveja IPA — Lisbon craft brewery, excellent

Our Verdict

Lisbon's best sports bar experiences are split between the local neighbourhood bars and the more international venues of Cais do Sodre. For the genuine Portuguese football atmosphere — the Benfica and Sporting rivalry in full effect — the Mouraria and Alfama neighbourhood bars deliver something that no purpose-built sports bar can replicate. For international sport coverage and early kick-off access, The Lisboan and O'Gilins in Baixa are the most reliably equipped options in the city.

Our recommendation for first-time visitors is O Solar dos Presuntos in Mouraria for a Benfica match, followed by Pavilhao Chines for the post-match drink in one of Europe's most distinctive bar environments.
