Moeder Lambic Original bar Saint-Gilles Brussels
Craft BeerSaint-Gilles
Moeder Lambic Original

The original Moeder Lambic on Rue de Savoie is smaller and more neighbourhood-focused than its Fontainas sibling. Forty draught taps, the same rigorous Belgian craft focus, but with the lived-in warmth of a Saint-Gilles local bar. The cheese and charcuterie boards pair excellently with the lambic selection, and the back terrace is one of the neighbourhood's quieter outdoor spaces on a warm afternoon.

Le Coq bar Brussels craft beer Ixelles
Craft BeerIxelles
Le Coq

Tucked onto Rue Auguste Orts in the heart of Ixelles, Le Coq has assembled one of the most thoughtfully curated Belgian beer lists in the city without ever appearing to try too hard. The emphasis falls on lesser-known regional breweries rather than the famous abbeys, which means regular discoveries for the informed drinker. The kitchen serves simple Flemish classics until 11pm, and the stoemp alongside a Saison Dupont is a combination we recommend without reservation.

Brasserie de la Senne Brussels taproom craft beer
Craft BeerMolenbeek
Brasserie de la Senne Taproom

Brasserie de la Senne produces some of the finest modern Belgian ales in existence, and their Molenbeek taproom offers direct access to the full range. The Taras Boulba, Zinnebir, and Jambe-de-Bois are exceptional in draught form here, fresher and more precise than in any retail bottle. The industrial brewing space behind the bar creates a terrific atmosphere, and the staff pour with the confidence of people who understand what they are serving.

Delirium Cafe Brussels beer bar Grand Place
Craft BeerGrand Place
Delirium Cafe

Guinness World Record holder for the most beers on the menu at one establishment, with over 2,000 labels from 60 countries. Tourist-adjacent by necessity given its Grand Place location, but genuinely impressive in scope and the Belgian selection specifically is as good as anywhere in the city. Order from the lambic and sour section if you want to leave with a proper understanding of what makes Belgian brewing different from everywhere else in the world.

A La Mort Subite

A Mort Subite on Rue Montagne aux Herbes Potageres is one of those bars where the architecture and the beer achieve equal importance. The Belle Epoque interior, untouched since 1928, provides the backdrop for gueuze and faro served in their appropriate glasses. The house lambic poured here comes directly from the Belle-Vue brewery via a private supply agreement that makes this the most authentic gueuze experience outside Cantillon. Arrive before 7pm to appreciate the full interior in peace.

By Neighbourhood

Craft Beer by District

Anderlecht

Cantillon sits in Anderlecht and justifies the journey alone. The 25-minute walk from the centre takes you through the working-class neighbourhood that gives the brewery's wild fermentation its particular local character.

Saint-Gilles and Fontainas

Moeder Lambic Original and Fontainas represent the two poles of Belgium's finest craft beer bar brand: neighbourhood intimacy versus central access. Both are essential; neither disappoints. The Saint-Gilles location is generally quieter and more local.

Molenbeek

Brasserie de la Senne's taproom has given Molenbeek a genuine craft beer destination. Recyclart next door serves a good supporting cast of Belgian bottles if you want to extend the evening without changing neighbourhood.

City Centre

A la Mort Subite is the historic anchor, Delirium Cafe the overwhelming beer list. Between them they cover every range of drinker from the novice tourist to the obsessive collector looking for rare lambic vintages.

Ixelles

Le Coq and a cluster of neighbourhood bars make Ixelles the best place to drink Belgian craft beer alongside locals rather than alongside fellow tourists. The evening atmosphere is consistently better than anywhere in the city centre.

Grand Sablon

The Sablon's antiques and art crowd have their own set of beer cafes that rarely feature in guides. Explore the streets north of the square for the kind of authentic Belgian brown cafe experience that the city centre lost decades ago.

Editorial

Why Brussels Is the World's Craft Beer Capital

The argument is easily made: no city in the world has produced more consequential beer than Brussels. The lambic tradition, unique to the Senne river valley that runs through the city, depends on spontaneous fermentation by wild yeasts that live in the local air. You cannot brew authentic Brussels lambic in London or Portland or Tokyo, which makes Brussels the only place on earth to drink these beers at their best.

Cantillon alone would put Brussels on the global map. But the city's brewing culture extends well beyond the famous lambic houses. Brasserie de la Senne produces modern Belgian ales that rival any craft brewery in Europe. The Moeder Lambic bars have built a philosophy around Belgian craft beer curation that is equal parts education and pleasure. And the city's older cafe culture, embodied by A la Mort Subite and its Belle Epoque interior, reminds you that Belgian drinking culture was sophisticated before "craft beer" became a marketing category.

Prices remain remarkably honest. A glass of Cantillon Gueuze at the brewery costs €4. A pint of Brasserie de la Senne Taras Boulba costs €4.50 at the Moeder Lambic bars. Brussels offers access to the world's finest craft beer at prices that make every other major beer city look like a rip-off. For a complete Brussels night out, pair a craft beer session with stops at the Brussels cocktail bars for a pre-dinner aperitivo, then continue to the Brussels live music bars to close the evening.
