36 bars across 4 neighbourhoods, organised by occasion. From candlelit riad terraces in the Medina to the hotel cocktail bars of Hivernage that the guidebooks tend to overlook.
Marrakech operates differently from every other city in this guide. Morocco is a Muslim-majority country, and alcohol is available only in licensed hotels, restaurants with licences, and a handful of establishments in the Gueliz and Hivernage districts. Understanding this shapes the Marrakech bar experience entirely. What the city lacks in volume it compensates for in atmosphere.
The old city's licensed venues are almost exclusively hotel bars and rooftop restaurants attached to riad properties. The licensing environment means alcohol is less freely available here than in the new city, but the bars that operate do so in settings that no other neighbourhood in the world can match. Riad rooftop terraces with Atlas Mountain views at sunset are worth planning an entire evening around.
The French-built new city has the highest concentration of licensed bars in Marrakech. Boulevard Mohammed V and the streets radiating from it contain the city's most accessible drinking options, with prices that are lower than the Medina's hotel bars. Grand Café de la Poste and Kechmara anchor the strip, and several wine bars have opened in the past three years to serve the growing expat community.
The hotel district south of Gueliz contains the highest concentration of five-star properties and, with them, the city's most lavishly equipped bars. The cocktail programmes at the major hotel bars here rival anything in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Prices reflect the hotel tariffs, but several independent venues have established themselves in the surrounding streets at more approachable price points.
Twenty minutes from the Medina, the palm grove belt north of the city contains a strip of resort hotels with pool bars that trade on a legacy of 1990s glamour. The scene here is less fashionable than Hivernage but more relaxed, and the outdoor bars around the hotel pools are among the most pleasant places to drink in Marrakech on a hot afternoon in June or July.
