Cherusker

Craft Beer La Mariscal $$ Quito

Cherusker is the German end of Quito's craft beer scene, a brewpub on Joaquin Pinto in La Mariscal that has brewed to the 1516 Reinheitsgebot purity law since 2011. The house calls itself Ecuador's German cerveceria, and the beers and the food both keep that promise.

Who would love it: drinkers who want clean German lagers and wheat beers in a proper hall setting. Who would hate it: anyone after cocktails or a late club energy, since this is a sit-down beer and sausage room.

The room runs on long wooden tables and a calm, tavern feel a few streets off the main Mariscal nightlife. Cherusker brews European styles to the purity law, so the board sticks to malt, hops, water and yeast rather than gimmicks. That discipline is the draw for regulars who want the beer to taste like the style on the label.

Order a house lager or a wheat beer and pair it with a schnitzel or a soft pretzel, the way the kitchen intends. The German plates of sausages and crisp pork are built for the beer, not the other way around. The brewery sets out its full range on its own site, and Tripadvisor reviewers consistently rate it among the better beer stops in the neighbourhood.

Best time to go is mid-evening from Tuesday to Saturday, when the hall has filled enough to feel social but you can still get a table without a wait. It suits a long, seated session rather than a quick stop, so plan to settle in for a couple of rounds and a plate.

It pairs naturally with the rest of the best craft beer bars we cover, and with a walk to Bandido Brewing in the Old Town. See where it lands among the best bars in Quito.

Keep drinking
