Bar Big Lights

Natural Wine Bar Wine Bars $$$

Bar Big Lights is a natural wine bar and neo-French bistro in Hannam-dong, widely credited as the first natural wine bar in Seoul when it opened in 2017.

Star Wine List records its origin story: a six-table, invitation-only bistro bar tucked in a back alley in Itaewon that quickly became the hub for natural wine in the city. It has since moved upstairs in a building that now houses the Fritz Hansen Lounge.

Owner Lee Joo Hee is described as a pioneer of natural wine in Korea, and the cellar has become a destination for rare and exclusive bottles. The list rewards trusting the room rather than chasing a familiar label.

Food keeps pace with the wine. The neo-French kitchen cooks with seasonal ingredients over firewood and a charcoal grill, and the menu shifts with what is available, so regulars tend to order widely and share.

It opened in 2017, early enough that Visit Seoul credits it with seeding the city's now-large natural wine scene. Many of the bars that followed trace their inspiration back to this room.

The Hannam-dong setting fits the bottles: a quiet, design-led pocket of Yongsan near the river, more residential than the Itaewon strip a few minutes away. The second-floor space is intimate and made for lingering.

Hours reward planning. It opens Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 5pm, and weekends from 2pm, and closes Tuesday and Wednesday, so a visit takes a little scheduling. Reservations run through Catchtable or an Instagram DM.

Who would love it: wine drinkers who want bottles they cannot find elsewhere and food built to match. Who should skip it: anyone after a cheap quick glass, since this sits at the premium end and rewards a full sit-down.

The smart approach is to book ahead, arrive hungry, and let the team steer both bottle and plate. Bar Big Lights tops our best wine bars in Seoul ranking and makes a strong date-night bars in Seoul choice for a serious evening.

The broader Seoul bar guide covers the rest of Hannam and Itaewon, and wine-minded couples often follow it with a nightcap at Le Chamber.
