BlackLab Brewhouse

Craft Brewpub Barceloneta $$

Last reviewed February 15, 2026 · How we pick bars

BlackLab Brewhouse pours its beer about three steps from where it is brewed. The brewpub sits inside Palau de Mar on Plaça de Pau Vila, a waterfront block at the edge of Barceloneta, and the steel tanks behind the bar are not decoration. This is one of the few rooms in Barcelona where the IPA in your hand was made in the same building that afternoon.

Credentials first. BlackLab opened in 2014 as one of Barcelona's first craft brewpubs, and it has brewed everything on site ever since. The taps carry a rotating spread of house styles, usually around seven at a time, from American IPAs to a German Schwarzbier to a Belgian saison. Reviewers on BeerAdvocate and Untappd keep flagging the IPAs and the occasional sour as the ones to chase.

Order a tasting flight first and let the range make the case. Five short pours across an IPA, a porter, and whatever seasonal is on rotation tell you more than any menu line. From there, lock onto the house IPA, which regulars rate as the safest bet on the wall, or ask the bartender what was kegged most recently. The beer turns over often enough that the list rewards a second visit.

The kitchen is the twist, and it is built for pairing. BlackLab runs an Asian-American menu, so ramen, burgers, nachos, and sandwiches land next to the pints instead of the usual brewpub fried platter. A bowl of ramen against a malty porter is the cool-evening move; a sharp IPA cuts through the nachos on a hot afternoon. Few breweries in the city think this hard about what goes beside the glass.

The room reads industrial but easy, all exposed brick and tank-side seating, and the terrace at Palau de Mar is the seat to ask for when the weather holds. The crowd is a mix of beer travellers, Barceloneta locals, and curious visitors drifting up from the marina. Driftwood Journals called it a highlight of an entire European brewery trip, and the Time Out Barcelona listing keeps it on the city's craft map.

Time it for a Saturday if you want the full version, since BlackLab runs brewery tours that walk you past the tanks before you drink. Go early evening on a weekday for a calm flight and a clear seat at the bar. Skip a peak summer weekend if you want quiet, because the waterfront location pulls a crowd the moment the terrace opens.

The brewing is the reason to make the trip, not the backdrop. BlackLab leans into bold, hop-forward styles, and the team treats the rotating board as a running experiment rather than a fixed menu. Tripadvisor reviewers single out the freshness, since the beer travels only a few meters from tank to glass.

For a city better known for vermouth and cava, a proper on-site brewery this close to the water is a real find. The location helps, too, since Palau de Mar puts you a short walk from the marina, the beach, and the Born without ever feeling like a tourist trap. That balance of serious beer and easy waterfront setting is what keeps it on the city's craft map year after year.

Who it is for: a beer traveller chasing a real on-site brew, a long lunch that pairs ramen with a flight, and a waterfront pint after the Barceloneta beach. Who it is not for: a cocktail crowd or a late-night club night. Come for the seven house taps, stay for the kitchen, and let a flight turn into an afternoon by the marina.
