On the same street as the Picasso Museum. Walk-in only, no exceptions. The queue moves fast. Come at opening time on weekends or mid-afternoon on weekdays. Standing room fills by 8pm.
Carrer de Montcada is one of the most beautiful medieval streets in Barcelona, which means it is also one of the most overrun. El Xampanyet sits at number 22, and on any given evening the pavement outside resembles a polite argument between people who got there first and people who would like to. This tells you something important: it is worth it.
The bar opened in 1929 and the room has the particular quality of places that have never needed to update themselves. Hand-painted tiles, barrels stacked on the back wall, wine glasses hanging from a ceiling rack that looks like it should have been replaced in 1965. The Artés family still runs it. The house cava, served from unlabelled bottles at a price that makes London bartenders uncomfortable, is slightly sweet, very cold, and completely correct for the setting.
El Xampanyet is primarily a cava bar with a short, non-negotiable tapas menu. The anchovies are among the finest in Barcelona, which is a high bar. The cheese is good. The bread is adequate. None of this is the point. The point is the cava, the room, and the understanding that some things in the Barcelona hidden gems category are hidden in plain sight. Use this as your aperitivo stop before heading to Paradiso or Dr. Stravinsky nearby.
"The house cava is slightly sweet, very cold, and completely correct for the setting. Some things in life do not need improving."
We have brought people here who insist they do not like cava. By the second glass, they have stopped insisting. The bar's success rests on the gap between what it promises (very little) and what it delivers (something close to the ideal version of a Spanish wine bar). Do not come here expecting cocktail technique or a curated playlist. Come for a cold glass and good company in a room that looks exactly like it should.
12pm to 1:30pm on weekdays for the locals' lunch crowd. Or 7pm on the dot when evening service opens. Both windows give you the best chance of finding space at the bar.
Anyone who wants to drink in a room that has not been designed for Instagram. Locals celebrating small things. Visitors who ask their hotel concierge where they actually go to drink.
