Our Take on Kumpelnest 3000

Kumpelnest 3000 is the kind of bar that makes Berlin proud of itself. A former brothel in Tiergarten, it has been operating in various forms since the 1980s and shows no interest in updating its aesthetic. The walls are buried under velvet, taxidermy, baroque frames, and decades of accumulated Berlin strange. The lighting is exactly as dark as you would expect. The floor is sticky in the right places.

This is not a cocktail bar. The drinks menu is beer, spirits, and shots. The prices are the kind that make visitors from London and New York stop and stare at the chalkboard. A Berliner Pilsner runs €3.50. Shots cost €2 to €3. The bar is not making money on margins — it makes money on volume, and on the fact that people simply do not want to leave.

The crowd is genuine Berlin: artists, club workers ending a shift, students from the surrounding university districts, and a smattering of people who found it by following someone else. There is a small dance floor that gets properly used after 1am, when the jukebox (stocked with 80s new wave and German post-punk) gives way to a DJ who knows exactly what a room full of people at 2am needs to hear. We recommend Kumpelnest to anyone who wants to understand why Berlin's nightlife culture is unlike anywhere else. For the full Berlin bar guide, or if you prefer something more refined, consider Victoria Bar in Schoneberg as a warm-up before arriving here at midnight.

What to Order

Berliner Pilsner

The correct drink for this setting. Cold, cheap, and consumed in volume. The draft here is reliably good, which is everything you need.

Jagermeister shot

Ordered by reflex at Kumpelnest. At €2 a shot, it is impossible to argue against. Best consumed as a pair, best followed by another beer.

Whatever is in the fridge

The bar stocks a rotating selection of German craft cans alongside the classics. Some nights there is something worth discovering. Ask the bartender.

Vodka soda

Simple, effective, and unlikely to ruin your night at 3am. The bar does not do fancy — it does efficient, and it does it well.
