Mad Scientist Taproom

Craft Beer Bar Terezvaros $$ Reviewed by Marcus Webb

The Mad Scientist taproom trades as MADHOUSE, a downtown bar on Anker koz in Terezvaros, a few steps from Deak Ferenc ter. It is the brewery's own room in the city centre, and the place to drink the full Mad Scientist range at the source rather than from a shared tap line.

Who would love it: a beer drinker who wants 24 taps of one of Hungary's most inventive independent breweries, poured fresh and rotated hard. Who would not: anyone after a quiet pub, since the small room and the pavement tables fill quickly once the downtown crowd arrives.

The space is compact and unfussy, art on the walls and a long board of what is pouring, with a handful of pavement tables that work for watching the centre move. We Love Budapest reported the brewery opening MADHOUSE downtown in October 2020 as its flagship taproom, and the format has held: 24 lines, a rotating board, and a kitchen working alongside the glasses. The point is the beer, and the room keeps out of its way.

The taps are the reason to come. The board carries Mad Scientist's core and one-off releases across the styles the brewery built its name on, from the New York Stout, a milk stout that reads of coffee and cocoa, to the Liquid Cocaine IPA and a rotating run of fruited sours like the Blackcurrant Trifle line. Order a flight first and let the board, not the menu card, set the order. For drinkers off beer there is a short bench of natural wines and cocktails, but that is not why this room exists.

The crowd is a mix of beer-literate locals, brewery regulars, and a downtown after-work set drawn off Deak Ferenc ter. The room runs sociable and tends to spill onto the pavement in warm weather, and it programs events through the week, from tastings to DJ and market nights per the venue's listings. It reads younger and more design-led than the old Pest beer halls.

Marcus Webb's read for the technical drinker: this is a brewery showcasing its own work, so judge it on freshness and range rather than breadth of guest taps. The stouts and the high-gravity IPAs are the strongest argument here, poured at a measure and temperature that flatter them. Take the half-pour flight before committing to a full glass of anything above seven percent.

What regulars flag is consistent on Tripadvisor, where MADHOUSE rates 4.7 and ranks among the city's top dining and drinking rooms. The praise lands on the turnover of the tap list and the quality of the brewery's own beers, with the recurring note being that the best releases move fast, so a return visit rarely repeats the same board. The small footprint is the one honest caution: seats go early on weekends.

Best time to go: early on a weekday, flight in hand before the after-work rush claims the pavement tables. It belongs in any survey of the city's craft scene. See where it sits among the best craft beer bars in Budapest, and read our wider guide to craft beer bars by city for the global picture.
