Østerbros Perle

Sports Bar Østerbro $

The Pearl of Østerbro is exactly what its name promises and nothing its neighbourhood suggests: a plain, warm, unbothered locals' pub in one of Copenhagen's most polished districts.

It sits at Nordre Frihavnsgade 28 in Østerbro, roughly a ten minute walk from Parken, the national stadium and home ground of FC Copenhagen. That geography is the point. On match days the Perle fills with supporters taking a cheap, honest pint before the walk to the ground, and it absorbs the post-match crowd just as easily.

LiberoGuide describes it as "a genuine locals' bar, normal, everyday locals, who want to gather round the screen to watch the match, order another nicely chilled bottle of Tuborg, and engage their neighbour in conversation about the perils of the short corner." The guide calls it the best pre-match and post-match option around Parken, a verdict our editors see no reason to argue with.

Do not expect a screen wall. There is football on, the sound is up when it matters, and the regulars hold opinions they are happy to share. The room is small, the furniture has earned its scuffs, and conversation carries the place between fixtures. Among Copenhagen sports bars, this is the one that doubles as an actual neighbourhood institution. It belongs to the same bodega tradition as Café Intime in Frederiksberg, though with Tuborg in place of piano jazz.

What to order: a bottle of Tuborg, well chilled, is the house move. Draught macros and the standard Danish spirits shelf cover the rest. Prices sit comfortably below the city centre, in keeping with the bodega category. Anyone hunting tap lists should head for Fermentoren instead; this is not that kind of room.

Who it is for: FC Copenhagen supporters on a match day, Østerbro residents who want their local to stay local, and visitors who want to see how Danes actually watch football when nobody is performing for tourists. Solo drinkers do fine here; the bar talks to strangers.

Best time to go: two hours before any FC Copenhagen home kick-off, when the room is at its loudest and most companionable, or a weekday afternoon for the quiet version with the daytime regulars. Doors open at 10am every day, closing at midnight early in the week and 1am Thursday through Saturday. The full neighbourhood picture lives in our Copenhagen guide, with the match-day overview in the best bars for watching the game.
