Helsinki Slows the Record Down

Ambient Bar opened inside the Arabia factory complex at Hämeentie 133, the ceramics district in northeast Helsinki, as the city's first dedicated ambient listening bar. Resident Advisor covered the opening as a new home for the city's slower electronic scene.

Founder Jaakko Hurme, a local DJ and producer, built the room around sound first: a custom hi fi system designed by Finnish speaker specialist Anders Weckström, with acoustics by Janne Teräsvirta and a handcrafted wooden mixing desk at the centre, per the bar's own site and Tracks and Tales' venue profile.

The program runs downtempo, ambient, and adjacent live acts, with daytime hours as a cafe and cultural spot. MyHelsinki lists it as a destination worth the tram ride out of the centre.

A Vintage Room Tuned Like a Studio

A thoughtfully curated vintage interior with a diffuser wall, warm wood, and the mixing desk as the room's hearth. Tracks and Tales describes the effect as quiet light and deep sound; conversation happens, but the records lead.

Wine, Cocktails, and Coffee at Listening Volume

The bar pours a curated selection of wine, beer, and designed cocktails, with proper coffee through the daytime hours, per the venue's own program. Drinks run Helsinki standard, around 9 to 15 euros. Order something that does not need shaking during a quiet set; the room rewards drinks that match its pace. Daytime visits make it one of the better work cafes in the district.

Headphone People, Out of the House

Design students from the Arabia campus, producers, and Helsinki's quieter music heads. Evenings with booked DJs fill the room without turning it loud; Resident Advisor lists ticketed events, and the crowd treats listed sets like small concerts.

What regulars say:

  • Resident Advisor covered the opening as a significant addition to Helsinki's electronic scene.
  • Tracks and Tales praises the Weckström sound system as the room's defining feature.
  • MyHelsinki recommends it as a cultural spot worth leaving the city centre for.

Who it is for:

  • Music heads who pick bars by the speakers
  • A low volume date over natural wine
  • Avoid if you want a loud Friday; the room is engineered against it

Where It Lands
