The Editors on Anemon Galata
There are rooftop bars with views, and then there is Anemon Galata. Perched atop the Anemon Galata Hotel on Büyükhendek Caddesi, the terrace frames two of Istanbul's most iconic silhouettes simultaneously: the medieval Galata Tower at arm's reach and the shimmer of the Bosphorus beyond. On clear evenings, the Asian shore glows across the water.
We recommend arriving 45 minutes before sunset. By the time the muezzin calls from the mosques below and the sky turns amber over the Golden Horn, you will have ordered your second drink and have no desire to move. The bar team works with house-made syrups and locally sourced botanicals to produce cocktails that feel genuinely Turkish rather than generic hotel fare.
The Galata Sour uses pomegranate molasses and dried rose petal from the bazaar quarter. The Bosphorus Mule swaps ginger beer for a house-fermented ginger-cardamom shrub. Both are sharper and more interesting than what most hotel rooftops serve. The food menu sticks to small plates of mezze, and our advice is to treat it as exactly that: supplemental. The drinks and the view are the destination.
The venue draws a mixed crowd of design-conscious locals, European travellers staying in the neighbourhood, and Istanbul's in-the-know expat community. Tables fill by 20:00 on Friday and Saturday. Book ahead or arrive early in the week for the full unhurried experience.
Our Verdict
The best argument for staying in Galata over Sultanahmet. When Galata Tower is lit at night and the city noise softens to a hum five floors below, this terrace becomes one of Istanbul's genuinely great bar experiences. Order the Galata Sour at dusk. You will not regret it.
What to Order
Galata Sour
Raki-washed pisco, pomegranate molasses, dried rose petal foam, lemon. The signature cocktail and, by some margin, the best thing on the menu.
Bosphorus Mule
Turkish raki, house ginger-cardamom shrub, fresh lime, topped with sparkling mineral water. Lighter and more aromatic than the standard mule formula.
Anatolian Negroni
Gin, local bitter orange liqueur, dry vermouth infused with Turkish coffee. Stirred down hard, served over a single large ice cube. An excellent use of local ingredients.
Ayran Spritz
Sparkling wine, salted yoghurt wash, fresh mint, cucumber. The non-obvious choice that converts sceptics. Savoury and clean, suited to Istanbul's warmth.
