Lokal, Karaköy
Lokal sits on a small street in Karaköy, the formerly-industrial waterfront neighbourhood that has, since around 2014, become Istanbul's most concentrated district for design studios, art galleries and serious cocktail bars. Lokal opened in 2017 with a hi-fi sound system, a small selection of vinyl that gets played in actual sets across the evening, and a cocktail programme deliberately built to track the music. The bartenders treat a typical night as a record: opening track, working tracks, the side break around 11pm, the closing track. Side A.
Side A — Lokal, a typical Friday
22.30 onwards · 33⅓The bar's soundtrack is the working version of the playlist - jazz-electronic up to about 11pm, then deeper house and disco-edit toward 1am, closing on slower vocal tracks before the lights come up. The cocktail programme is timed against the music: lighter, longer drinks during the conversational opening; bolder, shorter pours during the dance-floor middle; a softer landing at close.
Lokal is small (about thirty-five seats, a long marble bar, two booths) and walk-in. Friday and Saturday fill by 10pm; Tuesday through Thursday are the right nights for conversation with the bar. The room operates as a club from around midnight on weekends; the cocktails get faster and the volume rises. Closed Sundays and Mondays.
