Unter occupies a basement beneath the streets of Karaköy and operates on an unspoken contract with its crowd: you come for the music, you stay for the beer, and you leave when the sun comes up. It opened in 2012 as a craft beer bar with occasional DJ nights. By 2016, the nights had taken over.
The space holds around 200 people comfortably and 300 when the room is truly working. The sound system is German and properly tuned for a low ceiling — the bass lands in your chest without overwhelming the speakers. The programming leans techno and minimal, with a secondary room for indie electronic on busier nights. International DJs appear monthly; local residents hold the weeknight sets.
We recommend Unter to anyone who wants to experience Istanbul's nightlife without the bottle-service culture that defines the Bosphorus venues. There are 18 rotating craft beer taps — always 6 Turkish, always 6 continental European, always a rotating 6 from wherever the bar manager has been most recently obsessed. Natural wine by the glass arrived in 2022 and works better than expected given the volume levels.
The crowd is genuinely mixed by Istanbul standards: locals from Beyoglu and Kadıköy, visiting Europeans, a significant contingent from Istanbul's creative industries. No dress code is enforced but the room has a visual identity — black clothing and vintage leather are overrepresented. Doors open at 22:00, the floor fills by midnight, and the last hour before closing tends to be the best.
