Our Take on Lyaness

In 2019, Ryan Chetiyawardana closed Dandelyan — the bar that had been voted World's Best Bar in 2018 — and replaced it with Lyaness. The broader cocktail world spent several months quietly confused about why. They stopped being confused when they tried the new cocktail menu. Lyaness runs on the same principles as Dandelyan: ingredient-led, seasonally changing, technically brilliant, conceptually interesting. The implementation is entirely its own thing.

The bar sits inside the Sea Containers hotel on the South Bank with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Thames and St Paul's Cathedral directly across the river. The room is designed to let the view do much of the work, which it does. The cocktail programme is built around a rotating set of hero ingredients, each season. These hero ingredients inform the entire menu, creating a cohesion that most bars do not attempt. The result, when it works, is one of the most coherent drinking experiences in Europe.

This is the bar that the London cocktail community considers the current standard-bearer for serious drinks on the South Bank. The Connaught Bar and the Beaufort Bar hold their ground on the north side of the river. Lyaness holds the south. If you are building a London cocktail itinerary, the choice between them is not either/or. Both reward your time and money. If you are choosing just one, choose whichever room fits your evening's mood — the Connaught's quiet precision or Lyaness's view across the Thames.

What to Order

Current Hero Cocktail
The menu is built around seasonal hero ingredients. Ask the bartender what is leading the current menu. This is always the right first order at Lyaness.
Lyaness Sour
The bar's take on a classic sour format, adapted to each season's hero spirit. Perfectly balanced, technically correct, and more interesting than the original format it riffs on.
The Long Drink
Built for the South Bank's longer evenings. Lower ABV, high flavour, thoughtfully extended. One of the best long drinks in London for sitting by the Thames window.
Non-Alcoholic Option
Lyaness runs one of London's most considered non-alcoholic programmes. The 0% list deserves the same attention as the main menu. Order one even if you are drinking — the construction is genuinely impressive.
Seasonal Fizz
The bar team produces a sparkling cocktail that changes with the season's hero fruit or botanical. Light, precise, built for the river-view tables. A reliable opener to any Lyaness evening.
Best Time to Visit
Weekday evenings from 5pm for the best combination of atmosphere and available seating. Aim for a river-facing table if possible. Sunset from the South Bank window is one of London's finest views.
Who It Is For
Cocktail drinkers who want the world-class drinking experience without the hotel formality of Mayfair. Anyone who cares about ingredients, technique, and a room that earns the view it sits in front of.
Insider Note
The menu changes with each season's hero ingredients — do not arrive with a fixed idea of what you will order. Ask the bartender to guide you. Budget £22 to £30 per cocktail. A non-alcoholic cocktail here outperforms most bars' full ABV offers.
