The roof terrace is heated and covered, so it works year round. Groups should book ahead.
A Hot Pink Drinking Den With a Roof Above Camden
Near & Far Camden sits at 48 Chalk Farm Road, a two minute walk from Chalk Farm station, and it commits hard to a look. The theme is import and export by way of Palm Springs, so expect hot pink walls, a backlit bar, woven cocoon chairs hung from the ceiling and flamingos tucked into the corners. Time Out described the feel as silly, feelgood and hard to dislike.
The bar spreads across four small floors. A pink snug sits downstairs, the main bar greets you at street level, and a restaurant and a heated, covered roof terrace stack up above with a view over Camden Stables Market. The roof is the reason to come. Because it is sheltered and warmed, it stays usable through winter, which separates it from most London terraces that close the moment the weather turns.
Order with a little care. Time Out singled out The Emergency Brexit, a Negroni stirred down with herbs and botanicals, as the pick of the list, and was cooler on the Benedict Cucumberbatch, a lighter gin, prosecco and cucumber number it called wishy-washy. Cocktails run around £8.50, and the kitchen leans Mexican, with tacos and burgers built for sharing rather than a sit-down dinner.
Timing changes the value a lot. The bar runs a two-for-one happy hour, and reviewers agree that is when the room makes most sense. Pay full price for a weak cocktail and you notice. Catch happy hour with a seat in the pink snug or a spot on the roof and the whole place clicks.
This is a bar for a night that wants colour and a view, not a quiet classic in a dark corner. The original Near & Far opened at Peckham Levels and has since closed, so Camden now carries the name. Pair it with a wander up the road to The Lock Tavern in London or a late drink at The Cuban Camden.
A group that wants a loud, colourful night with a roof to climb to. Cocktail drinkers who time their visit to happy hour. Anyone after a covered terrace in the cold months when other Camden roofs are shut. Avoid if you want a hushed room and a flawless classic served straight.
