A Midland Hotel Original That Closed In 2020
Mr Cooper's House and Garden opened in 2013 on the ground floor of The Midland Hotel on Peter Street, named for Thomas Cooper, whose house and gardens stood on the site in 1819. It launched as part of Simon Rogan's pair of Midland restaurants, with a tree at its center and a garden theme running through the room. Rogan stepped away in late 2016, and the kitchen carried on under Robert Taylor.
The restaurant and bar closed on 12 January 2020 as The Midland began a major refurbishment. The space later reopened under a new name, so this page stands as a record of what it was rather than a current listing.
A large ground floor room built around a central tree, with a house and garden theme that gave the place its name. Confidentials covered both its arrival and the changes that led to its close. The bar sat alongside the dining room as part of the same space.
The menu ran modern British, with cocktails and wine at the bar to open or close a meal. It earned strong local reviews across its run, first under Simon Rogan and then under Robert Taylor. For an equivalent today, the same room trades as Mount Street Dining Room and Bar at The Midland.
The Midland still runs two dining rooms, Adam Reid at The French and Mount Street Dining Room and Bar, the latter occupying the former Mr Cooper's space. For a current bar in the area, the city center cocktail rooms below are the better booking.
