Altstadt, Munich
The Most Famous Beer Hall in the World
Hofbräuhaus is the most famous beer hall in the world. The bar opened in 1589 as the royal brewery for the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty. The current building has been pouring continuously since 1828. Mozart drank here. Lenin drank here. Hitler gave speeches here, which the city now actively avoids highlighting.
The room is the largest beer hall in Munich — 3,000 seats across multiple rooms — and the atmosphere is part history, part theatre. The Hofbräu Original is on tap and the Weissbier is also brewed by the in-house brewery.
The crowd is overwhelmingly tourists drawn by the history. Locals tend to drink at Augustiner instead. Pair with Augustiner Stammhaus for a Munich beer hall comparison.
