Our Take on Bank Bar

Bank Bar inhabits a 19th-century banking hall near the National Theatre, and the building does the heavy lifting before a single drink arrives. The original vaulted ceiling, marble columns, and ornate plasterwork have been left intact, lit to acknowledge rather than overwhelm them. Tables are set at comfortable distances. The room absorbs sound without deadening it. When you sit down here, you feel the intelligence of the decision to leave the architecture alone.

The cocktail programme operates with similar discipline: a classic section that covers the canonical drinks with quality ingredients, a shorter seasonal list that changes every eight weeks, and a whisky shelf that is the best argument for arriving early and staying longer than you planned. The staff were clearly hired to match the room, which is to say they are knowledgeable, unhurried, and genuinely interested in helping you choose well.

Bank Bar is Oslo's best example of the kind of bar that European cities do well and which Norwegian cities have historically lacked: the serious drinking room inside a beautiful old building. It sits alongside Himkok as one of Oslo's two most compelling cocktail destinations, with a more architectural character and a slightly older crowd. The crowd that found it early does not talk about it much, which is why it still feels like a secret.

What to Order

01
Bank Old Fashioned
The house version uses a Norwegian single malt aged in Norwegian oak, with house-made birch demerara and Angostura. Better than a standard Old Fashioned and a statement of intent.
02
Classic Martini
The bar stocks Noilly Prat Original Dry alongside several quality gins. Order it very cold, with a lemon twist. In this room and at this temperature, it is almost perfect.
03
Nordic Amaro Flight
Three Norwegian and Scandinavian amaro-style spirits served in small tasting glasses. An education in what the region does with bitter liqueur styles. Worth ordering before dinner.
04
Rare Whisky Pour
Ask for the rare spirits list, which changes as bottles empty. Aged Scotch single malts and rare Japanese expressions appear regularly. This is the bar's hidden strength.
Best Time to Visit
Tuesday or Wednesday evening when the room is quiet enough to appreciate the architecture and talk to the bar team.
Who It Is For
Architecture and design enthusiasts, serious whisky and cocktail drinkers, anyone who wants Oslo's most atmospheric bar experience.
