The Barbès Microbrewery That Spices Beer With the Local Market

Brasserie de la Goutte d'Or opened in 2012 in the Goutte d'Or district of the 18th arrondissement, a multicultural quarter near Barbès. Untapped Cities and Cool Hunting both credit it as one of the pioneers of the Paris craft beer movement, brewing in a small space drinkers can visit.

It rewards anyone curious about beer with a sense of place. The brewery draws on ingredients from the nearby Marché Dejean, the open-air market that defines the neighbourhood, so the beers carry ginger, pepper, and dates that nod to North African and Indian cooking. The taproom pours them in front of the tanks that made them.

The brewery's own site describes a taproom that serves house beers on draft, natural wines, and tapas from neighbourhood producers, drunk steps from where they are brewed.

The Room

The taproom is a working brewery space, open select evenings so drinkers can taste in front of the fermentation tanks, per the brewery's site. Tripadvisor reviewers describe a modern, low-key room with good house brews. Beers come on draft and in 33cl and 75cl bottles to drink in or take away.

The Drinks

Order a house draft built around market spices, since that is what sets the brewery apart, per Untapped Cities. The lineup leans on ginger, pepper, and dates sourced from the Marché Dejean. Beyond beer, the taproom pours natural wines and serves artisanal tapas from local producers. Bottles in 33cl and 75cl are available to take home.
