Klamovka Beer Garden

Beer GardenKošíře$$

Klamovka Beer Garden sits inside Klamovka park in Košíře, on the western edge of Prague 5, where Smíchov meets the hill. The garden restaurant occupies a mansion that opened to drinkers in 1895 and still pours classic Czech lager under the trees.

The pitch is a traditional Prague garden, leafy and unhurried, built for an afternoon of lager rather than a cocktail programme. Anyone after a polished city centre bar should skip it, because the draw is the park setting, the shade and the everyday Czech beer.

Prague.eu records the history. The Košíře mayor Matěj Hlaváček bought the mansion from the Clam-Gallas family in 1895, converted it and opened a garden restaurant with a ballroom. That lineage makes it one of the older surviving beer gardens in the western districts.

The taps run to familiar names done well. The garden pours Pilsner Urquell, Velkopopovický Kozel Černý and unpasteurised Gambrinus 11 and 10, served across a covered restaurant and two open air beer gardens. Order the unpasteurised Gambrinus 11 and a plate of Czech pub food.

The setting is the real attraction. The surrounding park holds a neo gothic gazebo used for art shows, a rococo pavilion and old garden buildings, so a beer here can sit alongside a slow walk through the grounds.

Timing is seasonal. The outdoor gardens come into their own from late spring through early autumn, and weekend afternoons bring families and a steady local trade. A weekday afternoon is the quieter window for a shaded table.

Getting there takes a short tram ride. The Klamovka tram stop sits a few stops from Anděl, which puts the garden within easy reach of Smíchov while keeping the green, away from centre feel that defines it.

Best time to go is a warm weekday afternoon in the open garden. Who it is for: lager drinkers, families and anyone who wants a park over a bar. See our best craft beer in Prague guide, our Prague beer editorial, and the worldwide craft beer pillar.
