The Pitch

What this place is and who it is for

Idlewild sits on the second floor of the InterContinental Singapore on Middle Road, named after the original Idlewild Airport that became JFK in 1963. The room is a 1960s jet-set lounge with a 60-seat main floor, a 10-seat counter, and a small open-air terrace. The bar relaunched in 2023 under bar manager Ronan Yau with a menu organised around defunct Trans Pacific Airways routes.

It works for a 6pm pre-dinner cocktail before a Bugis Street walk and for a late-night hotel-bar nightcap that does not feel like a hotel bar. Skip the Sunday and Monday visit because the bar is closed. The Straits Times 2023 bar feature called Idlewild “the smartest hotel bar revamp on Middle Road in five years” and ranked the relaunch menu among the year's best.

The Room

What the space feels like

A 1960s jet-set lounge with curved banquettes, brass lamps, and a 10-seat counter under a globe-print ceiling. The main floor seats 60 across six round tables, the counter holds 10 stools, and a small terrace fits 12 on a covered balcony overlooking Middle Road. The Peak Singapore's 2023 bar feature described the relaunched room as “the closest Singapore comes to a Pan Am Clipper lounge without the smoking section.” The lighting drops at 8pm and the playlist turns to vintage exotica.

The Drinks

What to order, what to skip

Order the Trans Pacific Airways flight (88 SGD), a four-cocktail tasting that runs through the four defunct routes the menu is built around. The Honolulu build (28 SGD) is the off-menu request the bartenders pour when guests want the cleanest tiki-adjacent drink in the room. Skip the wine list, which The Infatuation Singapore's 2024 cocktail bar feature called “the only weak link in an otherwise tightly built programme.” The Saigon build on a Vietnamese coffee base (26 SGD) is the staff favourite for a closing drink.

The Crowd

Who shows up and when

Three shifts. From 5pm to 7pm the room pulls hotel guests and Bugis after-work professionals for the pre-dinner cocktail. From 7pm to 10pm the bar runs at peak service with a 70 percent local Singapore couples crowd and a 30 percent hotel concierge mix. After 10pm the room turns to a hospitality nightcap and a small late-night dance floor on the terrace. Tatler Asia's 2024 bar feature called Idlewild “the bar where the city's hotel concierges send their own friends for a Thursday night drink.

Best time to go

When to walk in

Idlewild runs three shifts and the right one depends on the goal. From 5pm to 7pm the bar is the spot for a quiet pre-dinner cocktail by the terrace and a walk-in works for a pair. From 7pm to 10pm the room runs at peak service and reservations are essential for a Saturday booth seven days out. After 10pm the bar turns to a nightcap shift and the terrace plays exotica until last call. Tuesday and Wednesday are the easiest walk-in nights; Thursday to Saturday require the seven-day booking window. Sunday and Monday are closed.
