Vienna's Most Glamorous Hotel Bar
The Onyx Bar sits at the top of Hotel am Schwarzenbergplatz, a grand address on one of Vienna's most ceremonial squares, with the Schwarzenberg monument and the sweep of the Ringstrasse below and the spire of St Stephen's Cathedral visible from the terrace on clear evenings. The bar opened as part of the hotel's renovation in 2019 and immediately became the benchmark for hotel bar drinking in a city with high standards for exactly that.
The interior references Viennese Secession design without imitation: onyx stone bar surfaces, curved leather seating in cream and dark grey, and pendant lighting that manages to be both dramatic and warm. The terrace, open from April through October, holds 40 seats and offers the kind of cityscape that Vienna keeps in reserve for its best venues. The evening light on the Baroque facades below at 7:30pm in summer is a genuine highlight of the city.
The cocktail programme is overseen by a head bartender who previously worked at hotel bars in Zurich and Hong Kong, an itinerary that shows in the menu's global sophistication applied to Austrian ingredients. For a direct comparison across Vienna's hotel bar tradition, the Loos American Bar represents the historic end of the spectrum while The Onyx represents the contemporary. Both are worth understanding.
What to Order at The Onyx Bar
The Schwarzenberg Sunset, a house cocktail of Austrian apricot brandy, Campari, fresh lemon, and prosecco, was designed to be ordered as the sun drops below the rooftops visible from the terrace. It is the right drink in the right place at the right time. Cocktails run €18 to €28. The wine list is heavily Austrian, with 12 whites by the glass, mostly Gruner Veltliner and Riesling from premium Wachau and Kremstal producers. A glass of top-end Riesling here, watching the square, is worth the premium over what you would pay in a wine bar.
The bar offers a compact food menu built around bar snacks and small plates: Viennese classics reworked into elegant finger food. The Gruyere-filled Flammkuchen and the beef tartare on rye are the standouts.

Getting There and When to Visit
Hotel am Schwarzenbergplatz is a five-minute walk from the Stadtpark U-Bahn station (U4) or from the Oper stop. The hotel entrance is on Schwarzenbergplatz 9. Take the lift to the bar level and follow the signs to the rooftop. Dress code is smart casual: the hotel enforces it politely but consistently.
The optimal visit is a summer weekday evening between 6pm and 9pm, when the terrace is full but not overcrowded and the light is at its best. Weekends require a reservation for the terrace. Arrive without one and you will likely be seated inside, which is still excellent, but the terrace is the reason to come. The bar also runs a Sunday aperitivo session from 4pm that draws a local crowd and is considerably more relaxed than the Friday and Saturday evening service.
For other rooftop options in Vienna, the Das Loft at Sofitel provides the most dramatic panoramic alternative. See our complete Vienna bar guide for a full evening routing including both hotel bars and neighbourhood cocktail rooms.
