Weltraum

Cocktail Bars $$

Weltraum keeps short, late hours, opening Thursday through Saturday from 6pm and running into the small hours under whatever art is on the walls that month.

Weltraum sits at Heumuhlgasse 14 in Wieden, the 4th district, a couple of corners from the Naschmarkt and the Freihausviertel's clutch of galleries and bars. The name means "outer space," and the concept is built around art as much as drinks: the bar runs rotating exhibitions and frames the night around its own three-part motto, "Kunst zum Fuhlen, Kunst zum Sehen, Kunst zum Trinken," art to feel, to see, and to drink. Falstaff lists it among the city's cocktail bars, which is the right shelf for a room that pours seriously while doubling as a gallery.

This is the rare Vienna bar where the walls change as often as the cocktail list, and the crowd comes for both.

The room

The space is small and gallery-like, hung with whatever show is up that month and lit for the art rather than for the selfie. The mood is creative and conversational, a Wieden crowd of artists, students and regulars who treat the place as a neighbourhood living room with better drinks. Because the hours are short and the room is intimate, it fills quickly once it opens; this is a place you settle into rather than pass through. The art-bar framing is genuine, not decoration, and it sets the tone for a slower, talkier evening.

What to order

Weltraum pours cocktails at moderate Wieden prices, gentler than the first-district rooms, which keeps the creative crowd coming back. The smart approach is to ask what the bar is mixing well that night and follow the bartender's lead rather than hunting for a fixed signature; the list leans seasonal and conversational. A long drink or a classic holds up just as well here as anything elaborate, and the point is to stay for more than one. Pair the drink with the current exhibition and treat the visit as an evening out rather than a quick round. The short opening hours keep the list tight, so expect a small, well-made selection rather than a sprawling menu.

The crowd

The crowd is a Wieden art set: gallery regulars, students from the nearby creative quarter, and locals who treat the rotating shows as a reason to return. The Freihausviertel around it has long been Vienna's small-gallery district, and Weltraum reads as part of that scene rather than apart from it. Conversation runs louder than the music, and the room rewards a guest who wants to talk about what is on the walls. It stays intimate even when full.

Who it is for

Weltraum is for the culture-minded drinker: the gallery-hopper, the date who wants a talking point on the wall, the local who likes a small room with a point of view. It is less for a big group or a fast pre-club drink. A short walk away, the canal-side Heuer am Karlsplatz in Vienna covers the design-forward end of the district, while the inventive Melete in Vienna handles drink-first cocktails nearby. Our wider guide to the best cocktail bars in Vienna maps the rest.

Best time to go

Go Thursday through Saturday from 6pm, since the bar is closed the rest of the week; an early arrival buys a seat before the small room fills. Time a visit to a fresh exhibition opening for the bar at its liveliest. For more of Wieden and the city, start with our Vienna bar guide and the broader cocktail bar collection.
