Iron Gate

Cocktail Bars Dupont Circle $$$

Iron Gate occupies a restored 19th-century stable and carriage house at 1734 N Street NW in Dupont Circle, one of the oldest restaurant addresses in Washington and a rare city bar where the best seat is outdoors under a century-old wisteria.

The Infatuation describes the room as one of DC's most romantic, and the layout backs it up: a long brick-lined former carriage run leads to a covered courtyard threaded with grapevines and wisteria, with a fireplace for the cold months. The kitchen runs a Greek and Italian menu under chef Anthony Chittum, but the bar holds its own as a destination, pouring Mediterranean-leaning cocktails and a deep list of Greek and Italian wine.

The move at the bar is happy hour, when the kitchen sends out a traditional pikilia platter for $22 alongside bar snacks and a short list of house cocktails. Order a spritz or an ouzo-based drink to match the menu, pair it with the platter, and take it to the patio if the weather cooperates. For a full sit-down, the prix-fixe dinner is the headline, but drinks and a light bite on the courtyard are the easier entry point and the better value.

The crowd skews to Dupont Circle locals, date-night couples and a professional after-work set from the surrounding offices and embassies. Washington City Paper has tracked the building through several restaurant lives and notes Iron Gate as its most enduring, open since 2014 in a space that has served food for more than a century. The patio is the draw in spring and fall; the indoor carriage room carries the winter.

Best time to go is an early weekday evening for happy hour, when the courtyard is open and the platter and cocktail run cheaper than a full dinner. Iron Gate runs Tuesday through Saturday and closes Sunday and Monday, so check the calendar before heading to Dupont. For a different kind of cocktail night, Columbia Room in Washington DC runs a tasting-menu bar nearby.

Who it suits: a date that wants a patio, a Dupont local after work, or a wine drinker after Greek and Italian bottles. Who it does not: a budget night, a large group, or anyone expecting a late Sunday pour.
