Kaufleuten Bar

Live Music $$$

Kaufleuten is not one thing. That is its great gift. Originally built as a guild hall in the 1880s and converted across the following century into one of Zurich's most celebrated entertainment venues, it now operates as a bar, cocktail lounge, restaurant, club, and live music venue under one impressively preserved art deco roof. The bar itself — a long, amber-lit counter running along the back of the main room — is the smartest place to sit in Zurich on a Wednesday evening.

The cocktail programme is serious without being earnest. The head bartender changes the menu seasonally and maintains a core list of 14 signature cocktails that have earned their permanence. Our pick is the Kaufleuten Sour, a house signature built on Swiss single malt, lemon, honey, and a dash of locally produced bitters. For those who prefer wine, the list covers Switzerland thoroughly and France competently. Come here for a date night in Zurich and the choice will never be questioned.

"Kaufleuten earns the reverence Zurich gives it. The cocktails are serious, the room is beautiful, and the live music pushes it well beyond a standard hotel bar experience."

The live music programme runs Wednesday through Saturday and covers a deliberately wide range: jazz quartets on Wednesdays, international touring acts on Thursdays and Fridays, and DJ sets that run until 4am on Saturdays. The acoustics in the main hall, shaped by decades of careful renovation, are exceptional. If you are planning to attend a ticketed event, book in advance. The bar stays open to non-ticket holders throughout, though capacity limits apply after 9pm on event nights. Pairing Kaufleuten with the broader Zurich live music bar scene makes for a well-rounded evening in the city.

Wednesday at 8pm, before the jazz starts. The room is quiet enough to taste your drink properly and loud enough to feel alive. Thursday evenings work well for date nights. Avoid Saturday after 11pm unless you have a ticket to the evening's main event. Kaufleuten also pairs well as a first stop before continuing toward the Widder Bar for a late whisky — two very different rooms that together cover Zurich's cocktail culture comprehensively.
