Best Date Night Bars in Berlin

12 date night bars, ranked and reviewed by our editors. Intimate cocktail bars in Schöneberg, wine bars in Mitte, and the most romantic evening venues Berlin has to offer.

  1. 01

    Victoria Bar

    Schöneberg · Potsdamer Strasse · $$$

The most respected classic cocktail bar in Berlin, open since 2001 and still the city's benchmark for serious, quiet drinking. Victoria Bar on the Potsdamer Strasse seats 40 in a long, low-lit room that discourages loud conversation and encourages leaning in closer to hear the person across the table. The cocktail menu is disciplined and classic — no theatrics, no gimmicks, no fire. The martinis, old-fashioneds, and sours are all exceptional. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings. Walk-in at the bar on weekdays. Our editors' first recommendation for a Berlin date night. Classic Cocktails

  2. 02

    Green Door

    Schöneberg · Winterfeldtstrasse · $$$

Recognisable by the oval green door that gives it its name, Green Door in Schöneberg has been one of Berlin's finest cocktail bars since 1994. The 1960s-designed interior — low banquettes, kidney-shaped tables, the original upholstery — feels as fresh as it did three decades ago. The cocktail list covers classics and house originals with equal care. The bar is always busy but never overwhelming. Reservations available for tables; bar seating walk-in. One of the most consistently excellent date night bars in the city. Since 1994

  3. 03

    Bar am Steinplatz

    Charlottenburg · Steinplatz · $$$

The bar inside the Hotel am Steinplatz is the most beautiful hotel bar in Berlin — a 1920s-inspired room with dark wood panelling, leather seats, and a cocktail menu that rewards proper attention. The bartenders are classically trained and take their time. The gin selection runs to 60 labels; the whisky wall is equally serious. An ideal pre-dinner or post-dinner drink for a date that requires something more considered than a neighbourhood bar. The atmosphere is polished without being stuffy. Reservations recommended but not required. Hotel Bar

  4. 04

    Rum Trader

    Charlottenburg · Fasanenstrasse · $$$

One of the world's great specialist bars. Rum Trader on the Fasanenstrasse has occupied the same tiny room since 1973, run for most of that time by the legendary Gregor Scholl. The selection of aged rums covers Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, and Cuban labels going back to the 1950s. The room holds 20 people. You do not get a menu — you describe what you like and the bartender chooses for you. This is not a bar for anyone who wants control over their evening. It is, however, the most memorable date night bar in Berlin by a significant margin. Since 1973

  5. 05

    Schwarze Traube

    Kreuzberg · Wiener Strasse · $$

A natural wine bar in Kreuzberg that operates with the quiet confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is. Schwarze Traube selects its natural wines from small producers across Germany, Austria, France, and Georgia with genuine obsession. The list changes entirely every few weeks. The room is small and candlelit; the food is cheese and charcuterie; the service is knowledgeable and unhurried. For a date that would rather talk about wine than be talked at about wine, this is the correct Kreuzberg choice. Natural Wine

  6. 06

    Newton Bar

    Mitte · Charlottenstrasse · $$$

Named after the photographer Helmut Newton and decorated with his enormous black-and-white photographs, Newton Bar near Unter den Linden is one of Berlin's grandest date night venues. The 6-metre ceilings, the leather banquettes, and the photographs create an atmosphere that feels simultaneously glamorous and serious. The cocktail list covers classics immaculately; the whisky selection is among the best in Mitte. Best for a first date that needs to make an impression, or a long evening that starts with cocktails and continues somewhere else in the neighbourhood. Grand Interior

  7. 07

    Lemons

    Mitte · Brunnenstrasse · $$

A small Mitte wine bar on the Brunnenstrasse that has built a devoted following for its natural wine curation and the warmth of the room itself. Lemons seats 30 across a bar counter and a few tables, and feels like someone's well-furnished living room that happened to acquire a wine cellar. The by-the-glass selection changes daily. The food is excellent small plates. Best on a Tuesday or Wednesday when the neighbourhood is quiet and the bar doesn't fill entirely. For hidden gem bars nearby, the surrounding Mitte streets are worth exploring after. Natural Wine

  8. 08

    Vox Bar at Grand Hyatt

    Mitte · Potsdamer Platz · $$$$

The Grand Hyatt's bar at Potsdamer Platz occupies a large, dramatically designed space that manages to feel intimate despite its size. The Vox Bar serves exceptional cocktails, runs a comprehensive whisky selection, and looks across the Potsdamer Platz with glass walls that frame the city at night. Best for a date that wants luxury without fussiness — the service is attentive without hovering. Pre-theatre drinks for the Berliner Philharmonie concerts next door has made this the most visited hotel bar in the Potsdamer Platz district. Hotel Bar

  9. 09

    Bar at Katz Orange

    Mitte · Bergstrasse · $$$

The bar inside the Katz Orange restaurant and courtyard complex in Mitte is one of Berlin's most atmospheric pre-dinner or post-dinner drinking spots. The courtyard is magical on a warm evening; the bar inside is all exposed brick and amber lighting. The cocktails are made for the restaurant's food-focused aesthetic — low in sweetness, complex in structure. If you are dining at Katz Orange, the bar before and after makes a full date night without needing to go anywhere else. Booking the restaurant usually secures bar access. Courtyard

    Prater Garten

    Prenzlauer Berg · Kastanienallee · $

Berlin's oldest beer garden, open since 1837 under the chestnut trees on the Kastanienallee. Prater Garten is an unconventional date night recommendation but one our editors stand behind: there is something genuinely romantic about drinking a cold Pilsner under 200-year-old chestnut trees in a city that has survived everything. The food is traditional German biergarten fare. The atmosphere on a summer evening is one of the great Berlin experiences. Combine with a walk through Prenzlauer Berg and the hidden bars of the neighbourhood. Since 1837

  11. 11

    Jin Bar

    Neukölln · Karl-Marx-Strasse · $$

A Korean-inspired cocktail bar in Neukölln that uses soju, makgeolli, and Korean spirits as the base for cocktails you will not find elsewhere in Berlin. Jin Bar is small, dimly lit, and surprisingly romantic despite the Neukölln address. The food — Korean bar snacks — is serious enough that you can eat a full meal here. Best for a date that wants something genuinely different. The yuzu sour and the soju old-fashioned are the orders to make. No reservations; arrive before 9pm or expect to wait. Korean Spirits

    Lokal

    Mitte · Linienstrasse · $$$

A Mitte wine bar and restaurant that has become one of the most trusted addresses in the city for natural wine alongside exceptional German and Austrian cooking. Lokal's wine list is curated by producers rather than region — you choose the winemaker first, then the wine. The room is small, the tables are close together, and the conversations that go on around you will be as interesting as any cocktail menu. Combine with the sports bar experiences nearby for a full Mitte evening, or continue to the cocktail bars in the surrounding streets. Natural Wine
