Cairo unwinds late, and the city spreads its best after work rooms across the map. Downtown keeps the old wood paneled bars where the day ends slowly, Zamalek holds the island classics and the Nile rooftops, Agouza keeps the live music room across the river, and Maadi runs the gastropubs by the water. We built this route to start with the Downtown classics, cross to Zamalek as the light drops, and finish with a draft beer in Maadi. These are the eight after work bars in Cairo we send people to first, each one verified and covered by the city's bar guides, from Cairo 360 and CairoScene to the local nightlife writers.
Begin in the old commercial heart of the city, where the longest running bars in Cairo sit behind unmarked doors. This is the right place to start a slow evening.
Cross the bridge to the island of Zamalek, where the city's English style pubs and Nile rooftops draw the after work crowd. This is where Cairo comes to unwind by the water.
Cross back to the west bank for the room that turns an after work drink into a night of live music. It is a short ride from the island and worth the trip.
Finish south of the centre in Maadi, the tree lined river suburb, where the gastropubs and rooftops keep the night going. Both stops here reward the trip south.
If you have one evening, start Downtown at Cap d'Or for the slow opening drink, then cross to Zamalek for Pub 28 and a Nile sunset at Crimson. Add Cairo Jazz Club in Agouza when you want the night to build around a band, and save Maadi and The Tap for a draft beer and comfort food to close on. The bridges link the island to both banks in minutes, Maadi sits a longer ride south, and most of these rooms hit their stride in the early evening as the after work crowd arrives.
