Open since 2007. The Death & Co cocktail book is the country's most-recommended bartender reference. Cocktails $19 to $24. Reservations open at midnight three days out and the 7pm sitting books fastest. The Punch Magazine retrospective called Death & Co "the bar that exported the modern New York cocktail" and that read still holds.
No menu. Tell the bartender what you like. Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy run the room that succeeded Milk & Honey. Cocktails $20. Walk-ins only and the second-room queue forms by 9pm. The Infatuation called Attaboy "the city's most reliable cocktail order, anywhere". Order the Penicillin (Sam Ross's house drink).
Through the phone booth at Crif Dogs. Reservations only, opened at 3pm daily on the phone. Jim Meehan's bar set the speakeasy template that every other room copied. Cocktails $18 to $22. The Esquire archive called PDT "the bar that made the speakeasy a national format". The 7pm Wednesday slot is the locals' choice.
A two-time World's Best Bar winner. The Parlor upstairs is the cocktail room; the Taproom on the ground floor pours Guinness. Cocktails $17 to $19. NYC consistently fields the most entries on the World's 50 Best Bars list of any city outside London. The four below are the 2024-2025 picks worth booking specifically.
Ranked No. 1 in North America's 50 Best Bars (2023, 2024). The back-room tasting menu runs cocktails inspired by sandwiches. Cocktails $19 to $24. Reservations book a month out for the back; the front room walks in. Imbibe Magazine flagged the team as the most-watched in American cocktail bars.
The Crown Shy team's cocktail bar on the 64th floor of 70 Pine. Cocktails $22 to $28. Reservations open 30 days out and the 6pm sunset slot books in minutes. The room seats 44. Esquire called it "the hardest-to-book cocktail bar in New York". The Smoke Show is the order; the view is the photo.
Masahiro Urushido's Japanese-American room won Spirited Awards Best New American Cocktail Bar in 2018. Cocktails $19. The Hinoki Martini and Tokyo Highball are the orders. The room runs tight; reservations open two weeks out. Regulars on r/AskNYC consistently flag Katana as the most-recommended cocktail bar west of Hudson.
Ignacio "Nacho" Jimenez and Tommy Quimby's Mexican-leaning cocktail bar entered the World's 50 Best Bars list in 2024 at No. 51. Cocktails $16 to $20. Walk-ins on weekday evenings; weekend nights book 10 days out. The Quesadilla cocktail is the most-recommended order on r/AskNYC.
The four below are the rooms the cocktail bartenders themselves go to after closing. They are smaller, harder to find, and weirder than the headline picks. They are also the ones our editors return to most for second visits.
A former opium den turned apothecary-themed cocktail bar on the bend of Doyers. Cocktails $19 to $22, organised by ailment on the menu. The room is dim, tight, and the most-photographed cocktail bar interior in Manhattan per Time Out NYC's room ratings. Walk in early; the queue from 9pm onward is the format.
The Atlas Bar (Singapore) team's NYC outpost. Sip is the cocktail bar; Guzzle is the upstairs lounge. Cocktails $20 to $26. Time Out NYC named it the best new bar of 2024. The Greenwich Village room runs quieter than the LES competition; reservations open three weeks out for prime weekend slots.
Toby Cecchini's 1951 diner reopened as a cocktail bar. The Gin Gimlet is the order and the most-copied single drink in the Brooklyn cocktail scene per Punch Magazine. Cocktails $16 to $19. Walk-in only. Sunday early-evening holds the locals' choice slot; weekend nights cap fast.
