Chicago's rooftop restaurants split into two columns. The Loop hotels run skyline-view dining; the neighborhood rooftops run shorter menus on smaller decks. The 10 below are the rooms our editors return to for both the food and the view.
For the broader picture, see the rooftop comparison further south, the best bars in Chicago 2026, and the Chicago rooftop bars directory. For the cocktail-focused side, the best cocktail bars in Chicago 2026 covers what this article does not.
The 13th-floor restaurant at the Chicago Athletic Association looks straight across Millennium Park and the lakefront. Plates run $18 to $42; small bites $14 to $18. The Eater Chicago annual rooftop list has named Cindy's the city's best rooftop dinner five years in a row. Reservations open 30 days out and the 6pm Friday sunset slot is the city's fastest-filling rooftop table.
The LondonHouse rooftop sits at the bend of the Chicago River and the menu runs Mediterranean-leaning ($22 to $48 mains). The view is the city's most direct River-meets-Lake panorama. The Time Out Chicago rooftop review called LH "the city's best lower-deck rooftop dinner". Reservations open 21 days out; the 7pm Thursday slot is the locals' choice.
A 39th-floor rooftop restaurant with the most uninterrupted skyline view from any restaurant in the Loop. Mains $28 to $52. The room opens onto an outdoor terrace for the cocktail program. Reservations open 28 days out and the 7:30pm Friday booking is the city's hardest-to-secure skyline dinner table per repeated coverage in Chicago Magazine.
Beyond the Loop, the Old Town and Lincoln Park rooftops run shorter menus and quieter rooms. The four below are the ones our editors recommend for a date rather than a corporate dinner.
A 13th-floor rooftop with a direct Lake Michigan view at the south end of Lincoln Park. The menu runs lighter than the Loop competition (plates $16 to $32) and the room operates indoor-outdoor year-round under a retractable roof. The Infatuation called it "the city's most-recommended rooftop date room". Sunset slots book a week ahead.
A 27th-floor rooftop at theWit hotel that pairs a short food menu (plates $14 to $28) with the city's most-recommended late-night rooftop slot. The room operates until 2am Friday and Saturday. The crowd skews younger after 11pm. Reservations help on weekend nights; weekdays walk in.
The Park Hyatt's seventh-floor terrace looks east across Michigan Avenue and north toward the Water Tower. The menu runs more serious than most hotel rooftops (mains $32 to $58). Eater Chicago consistently includes NoMI in the city's best-hotel-restaurant lists. The Saturday brunch terrace slot is the locals' weekend choice.
A fifth-floor terrace with retractable walls and the most-curated cocktail list of any hotel rooftop in Chicago. The small-plates menu runs Asian-leaning ($14 to $36). Chicago Magazine flagged Z Bar as one of the city's most-recommended rooftop terrace dinners. The terrace stays open through fall under heaters. Reservations open 14 days out.
The three rooftops below run further from the Loop's hotel circuit and pair best with a Fulton Market or River North dinner that starts earlier.
A 22nd-floor terrace with a near-360 view that takes in the Chicago River, Lake Michigan and Navy Pier. The menu runs short and shareable (plates $14 to $28). Time Out Chicago called VU "the most underrated rooftop in the city" in its 2024 rooftop review. Reservations open 14 days out and the 6pm Saturday slot books fastest.
An 18th-floor whiskey-leaning rooftop tucked inside the Raffaello hotel. The bourbon list runs 80 deep; the food menu is short ($14 to $28). The Chicago Tribune's repeated coverage flagged Drumbar as the city's most-recommended whiskey rooftop. Skip if you came for the view alone; the bourbon program is the order.
A 26th-floor rooftop at the Loews with a Navy Pier and lake view. The menu runs lighter (plates $16 to $32) and the room's heated patio operates year-round. The Time Out Chicago 2024 rooftop list flagged Apogee as the city's most underrated new rooftop opening. Reservations open 14 days out; weeknight slots walk in.
Chicago's rooftop season runs late April to early November. The Loop hotels keep their indoor counterparts open year-round under heaters or retractable walls. Cindy's and LH operate enclosed sections through the winter. ROOF on theWit, Z Bar and Apogee run heated terraces through November.
The top tier (Cindy's, Aire, LH) requires 28-day reservations for prime slots. Mid-tier (J. Parker, NoMI, Z Bar) takes a 14-day window. The lesser-known picks (VU, Drumbar, Apogee) walk in on weekdays.
