The 16 best tiki bars in the world .

Tiki bars are back. The format almost died in the 1990s; it now sits in its third worldwide revival. From London's Trader Vic's to Tokyo's Trader Vic's, from Singapore's Tippling Club to a serious new wave of independent rooms across Berlin, Madrid and Mexico City, tiki is once again the cocktail format that takes itself the most seriously. Here is the editorial shortlist of the 16 best tiki bars in the world in 2026.

Smuggler's Cove in San Francisco remains the world's best tiki bar by drink discipline. Trader Sam's at Anaheim runs the most-themed room. Three Dots and a Dash in Chicago holds the polished mainland tiki crown. Mahiki has reclaimed the London title from Mahiki Kensington under new ownership. Reservations required for the top five worldwide.

The modern tiki revival began in 2009 when Smuggler's Cove opened in San Francisco. Owner Martin Cate published the rum bible that the rest of the world's bartenders started studying. By 2018, every serious cocktail city had at least one credible tiki room. By 2026, the format has moved past kitsch and into a working programme that combines rum discipline, tropical-fruit precision, and theatrical service.

Our 16 picks below are ranked by drink quality first, room atmosphere second, and rum-list depth third. Several of the famous tourist tiki bars do not appear because their cocktail programmes have not kept pace with the discipline of the new wave.

The world-ranked tiki bars.

Five rooms earn the global top tier. Each combines serious bartending with a real tropical-bar atmosphere, not pastiche.

1. Smuggler's Cove · San Francisco

Smuggler's Cove holds the world tiki title and has done so since its 2009 opening. The list runs to 80 cocktails, divided by rum era and region. The rum library exceeds 700 bottles, the deepest of any bar on earth. Three floors of room, lit at the colour of a sunset.

The Cobra's Fang is the order. Reservations through their website 30 days ahead for weekend tables. Walk-in seats at the bar open at 5pm on weeknights.

Best for: the destination tiki night. Best time: Tuesday 7pm.

2. Three Dots and a Dash · Chicago

Three Dots is the most-polished tiki room outside San Francisco. The basement bar runs an aggressive rum list paired with cocktails that lean toward the Don the Beachcomber classics rather than the Trader Vic interpretations. The Three Dots and a Dash signature is the order.

The room is dim, the carving on the walls is real Polynesian collection material, and the bartenders work at a precision that rivals any serious cocktail bar in the Midwest. Reservations recommended Thursday through Saturday.

Best for: polished tiki without the SF queue. Best time: Wednesday 8pm.

3. Laki Kane · London

Laki Kane reclaimed the London tiki title from the older Mahiki rooms when it opened in 2019. The list rotates seasonally. The room is two floors of palm, bamboo and incandescent light. The rum programme exceeds 300 bottles.

The signature Macanudo is the order. The downstairs Sugarcane Bar offers a more discreet table service if you prefer the bar work without the music level.

Best for: London's serious tiki night. Best time: Thursday 8pm.

4. Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar · Anaheim

Trader Sam's is the most-themed tiki room on earth. The Disney-imagineered interior triggers full audio-animatronic effects when certain cocktails are ordered. The drinks themselves are surprisingly serious; the Krakatoa Punch and the Uh-Oa serve real Polynesian rum-based programmes rather than tourist sugar bombs.

Tip the waitress for the full theatrical service. Walk-in only; no reservations. Arrive at opening (3pm) for a seat.

Best for: the full theatrical tiki experience. Best time: weekday 3pm.

5. Mahiki · London Kensington

Mahiki Kensington reopened in 2024 under new ownership with a cocktail programme overhaul. The Treasure Chest punch bowl is the order. The room remains the most-photographed tiki bar in London. Booking through their app required; smart-casual dress code.

Best for: the group celebration. Best time: Friday 8:30pm.

The serious bartender's tiki rooms.

Six rooms across Europe and Asia that run cocktail programmes serious enough that the local industry treats them as the tiki standard for their region.

6. Mauka · Berlin

Mauka is the most-respected tiki room in continental Europe. The list runs to 40 cocktails, the rum cabinet is the deepest in Germany, and the bartenders trained at Smuggler's Cove. The Berlin Mai Tai is the order. The room is small and the wait can exceed 90 minutes on weekends.

Best for: a serious Berlin tiki night. Best time: Wednesday 9pm.

7. SLOWLY Bar · Seoul

SLOWLY is the Asia-Pacific tiki room our editors flag most often. The list leans toward Pan-Asian rum interpretations. Ginger, lemongrass and yuzu replace the usual American tiki citrus. The room holds about 20 seats, lit dim, papered with vintage Polynesian travel posters.

Best for: the Seoul tropical cocktail. Best time: Thursday 9pm.

8. Tropic City · Bangkok

Tropic City is the Southeast Asian tiki standard. The list is the longest in Bangkok, the rum library exceeds 250 bottles, and the prices are roughly half of any European or American room above. The crowd is mixed local-and-expat; the music leans tropical house.

Best for: weeknight Bangkok tiki. Best time: Tuesday 8pm.

9. Lost Lake · Chicago

Lost Lake is Chicago's neighbourhood answer to Three Dots and a Dash. The room is smaller, the music is louder, and the drinks lean experimental. The Spicy Mai Tai is the house signature. Weeknight walk-ins easy; weekends require booking through Resy.

Best for: the Chicago weekday tiki night. Best time: Wednesday 8pm.

10. La Factoria · San Juan, Puerto Rico

La Factoria is not formally a tiki bar but holds the Caribbean tiki crown because its rum programme is the deepest in the Caribbean. Five connected rooms behind an unmarked door, each with its own music and cocktail focus. The hibiscus daiquiri is the order.

Best for: tiki in its rum-heritage geography. Best time: Friday 11pm.

11. Hanky Panky · Mexico City

Hanky Panky's tiki room runs a Latin-leaning programme that swaps rum for sotol, mezcal and aged tequila on several house signatures. The list is shorter than the American rooms but the cocktail discipline is higher. Reservations through their WhatsApp number required.

Best for: tiki with a Latin spirits base. Best time: Thursday 10pm.

The classics still worth visiting.

Five long-running tiki bars that earn their place on this list by sheer institutional weight. The drinks may not match the new wave for invention, but each room serves a slice of bar history that the newer venues cannot replicate.

12. Tiki-Ti · Los Angeles

Tiki-Ti opened in 1961 and is still run by the original founder's grandson. Twelve bar seats only. The list runs 90 cocktails. The room is the most-authentic American tiki bar still operating. Cash only. The Ray's Mistake is the order. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

Best for: tiki history in a 12-seat room. Best time: Tuesday 6pm.

13. Hala Kahiki · Chicago suburbs

Hala Kahiki has barely changed since 1964. The original lava-rock bar, original bamboo trim, original Polynesian carvings. The drinks are honest mid-century classics. The room is the closest thing to a working tiki time machine in America. Worth the 30-minute drive from downtown Chicago.

Best for: tiki archaeology. Best time: Saturday 7pm.

14. Trader Vic's · Tokyo

The Tokyo Trader Vic's has been pouring Mai Tais since 1974. The room is large, the rum cabinet is well-stocked, and the bartenders work to the original Trader Vic recipes without deviation. The Mai Tai here is the closest to the 1944 Oakland original of any bar in the world.

Best for: the original Mai Tai recipe. Best time: Wednesday 8pm.

15. Don the Beachcomber · Huntington Beach

The current Don the Beachcomber operates on the site of the original 1934 Hollywood location's spiritual successor. The cocktail list runs to 60 of the Beachcomber's original recipes. The Beachcomber Punch is the order; the Zombie is the second order.

Best for: the tiki origin-story night. Best time: Friday 7pm.

16. Hale Pele · Portland, Oregon

Hale Pele runs the most-themed indoor space on this list outside Trader Sam's. Working volcano, indoor rain shower, hut-style booth seating. The cocktail list is serious enough to back the theatrics. The Volcano Bowl is the group order. The Smoking Cocktail Tree the bartender brings to your table is real.

Best for: a Portland group tiki night. Best time: Saturday 8pm.

How to use this list.

Tiki bars run their own rhythm. Most rooms above open after dark and stay open later than the city around them. The Smuggler's Cove and Three Dots tier requires booking weeks ahead. The neighbourhood-tier rooms (Lost Lake, Tiki-Ti, Hale Pele) take walk-ins.
