Chicago holds the Guinness World Record for the largest rooftop bar on earth, Offshore at Navy Pier. We ranked the 9 rooftops worth your evening, by view, drink and seat.

No American city does the rooftop bar like Chicago. The skyline is dense and dramatic, the Chicago River cuts through the middle of it, and Lake Michigan opens the eastern horizon. Height here buys a genuinely great view, not just a high one.

Chicago also owns a record. Offshore at Navy Pier is the largest rooftop bar in the world at 52,310 square feet, certified by Guinness World Records in June 2019. We ranked the 9 rooftops worth planning around for 2026.

The Loop and the river: the marquee views

Chicago's best-known rooftops cluster downtown, where the towers stand closest and the river bends through the frame.

1. LH Rooftop at LondonHouse, Loop

Loop, Wacker and Michigan · $$$$ · Sunset, reserve ahead

Our top pick is a tri-level rooftop 22 stories above the bend of the Chicago River, with an indoor lounge on 21 and the open terrace on 22. The view runs straight down the river and out toward Lake Michigan, with the skyscrapers close enough to read, per the city's tourism board, Choose Chicago.

Order the LondonHouse 75, the house take on a French 75, and book a railing seat for sunset. This is the single best balance in the city of view, cocktails and a real terrace. It is our companion pick to the full Chicago rooftop bars page.

2. Cindy's Rooftop, Loop

Loop, over Millennium Park · $$$ · Daytime to dusk

Cindy's tops the Chicago Athletic Association hotel and looks straight over Millennium Park. From the terrace you see Cloud Gate, the Bean, from above, with the skyline and the lake behind it, per Choose Chicago. A glass atrium keeps part of it open in cool weather.

It is the most photogenic park-and-skyline angle in Chicago. Come earlier than the river rooftops, since the park view is best in daylight and the early golden hour. Try the Cindy's Lemonade.

3. ROOF on theWit, Loop

Loop, by the Chicago Theatre · $$$ · Year-round

ROOF sits 27 stories up at theWit hotel, the highest open-air rooftop on this list. A retractable roof keeps it running in most weather, and Travel and Leisure has named it among the top three rooftop bars in the world, per 360 Chicago.

This is the height-first choice, livelier and later than the hotel terraces below it. Go for the altitude and the after-dark skyline, and expect a scene on weekend nights.

8. VOL. 39, Loop

Loop, Kimpton Gray Hotel · $$$ · Early evening

VOL. 39 is a smaller, cocktail-led terrace at the Kimpton Gray, set among the financial district towers rather than above them. It trades the wide panorama for a polished, design-driven room and a serious drinks list, and it carries a 4.5 rating in our index.

Come here when you want the cocktail to lead and the view to be a backdrop. The VOL Spritz is the signature. It is the most bartender-focused pick downtown.

9. Raised, Loop

Loop, State and Wacker · $$ · After work

Raised is a third-floor terrace on the corner of State and Wacker with a clean line on the Chicago River and the cityscape, per 360 Chicago. The kitchen runs twists on classics, from truffle frites to lobster rolls.

It is the easy after-work option, lower and more relaxed than the tower rooftops, with the river still in view. The value play of the downtown cluster.

Streeterville, River North and South Loop

Step out from the core and the rooftops spread toward the lake and south along the skyline.

5. Drumbar, Streeterville

Streeterville, Raffaello Hotel · $$$ · Evening

Drumbar crowns the Raffaello Hotel in Streeterville, an intimate cocktail rooftop a few blocks off the Magnificent Mile. It carries a 4.6 rating in our index, the highest of any Chicago rooftop we track, and it leans craft over crowd.

The signature is the Drumbar Old Fashioned. Come for a precise drink and a close-in skyline rather than a record-setting view. It is the connoisseur's rooftop.

7. I|O Godfrey Rooftop, River North

River North, Godfrey Hotel · $$$ · Year-round

I|O Godfrey tops the Godfrey Hotel in River North and runs all year with retractable walls and a roof, so it works in a Chicago winter. It puts you in the middle of the city's busiest nightlife district.

Order the Godfrey Mule and use it as a launch pad for a River North night out. The most reliable cold-weather rooftop on the list after theWit and Offshore.

6. VU Rooftop, South Loop

South Loop · $$ · Sunset

VU sits 22 stories above the South Loop, which buys it a postcard angle back at the downtown skyline rather than a view from inside it. That distance is the point. The towers line up in one frame.

It is the best value among the tall rooftops, with a 4.4 rating in our index. Try the Vu Sangria at sunset and watch the Loop light up across the rail.

Navy Pier: the record holder

4. Offshore Rooftop, Navy Pier

Navy Pier · $$$ · Year-round

Offshore is the world's largest rooftop bar at 52,310 square feet, set atop Navy Pier's Festival Hall, per Guinness World Records. From the end of the pier it gives a panorama of Lake Michigan on one side and the full Chicago skyline on the other, per Navy Pier.

A barrel-vaulted glass enclosure keeps it open all year, with a 20,000 square foot outdoor terrace in season. It is the only spot in the city where you get the skyline and the open lake in a single turn. Worth the trip out the pier for that alone.

"Most cities make you choose between the skyline and the water. From the end of Navy Pier, Chicago gives you both."

Best time to go, and what to order

Aim for sunset, when the towers catch the last light and then switch on. River-facing rooftops like LH and Raised are best after dark. Park and lake rooftops like Cindy's and Offshore are best in the late afternoon and early golden hour.

For drinks, the house signatures are the safe call: the LondonHouse 75 at LH, the Drumbar Old Fashioned, the VOL Spritz. Reserve ahead for LH, Cindy's and Offshore in summer, when sunset tables go quickly.

Peak season runs May through September. For winter rooftop drinks, stick to ROOF on theWit, Offshore and I|O Godfrey, which stay open behind glass or retractable roofs.

Methodology

Dataset and selection. Six of the nine rooftops are drawn from the barsforkings.com index, bars-master-72-cities.csv, with their neighborhood, price tier and rating taken directly from the dataset, pulled June 2026. We added three further venues, ROOF on theWit, Offshore and Raised, verified against external sources. The ranking is editorial, by view, drinks, access and seat availability at sunset.

Sources. Heights, the world record and venue details cross-checked across Guinness World Records, Navy Pier, Choose Chicago and 360 Chicago, all linked inline. Floor counts reflect the building level of each terrace.

Notes. Price markers use our standard $ to $$$$ scale. Hours and seasonal access vary, so confirm before you go. We did not invent a venue, a price or a figure.
