Rennes drinks on Brittany cider and student energy, and its best rooms are pubs and night-bars with real character rather than polished cocktail dens. We checked an older 10-name list against current listings and venue records in June 2026 and kept only the venues we could confirm still trading from independent sources. Seven names could not be verified as open, so we cut them. These three are the ones worth crossing the city for.
L'Aventure has poured in the courtyard of the old Prison Saint-Michel since 1978, a Rennes night-bar run by Emma and Eric. The setting is the draw, an open-air courtyard tucked into a historic stone shell, with cocktails served Tuesday to Saturday. Order a cocktail and take a table outside in warm weather. Best on a mild evening. For drinkers who want Rennes character over polish.
Le Hibou sits at 10 Rue Dupont des Loges in an arty-vintage room once tied to the Rennes mosaicist Odorico. The menu runs to wines, good beers and sharing plates, with concerts, blind tests and exhibitions through the week. Order a beer or a glass of wine with a board. Open Monday to Saturday until 1am. For drinkers who want a creative neighbourhood bar.
Fox and Friends near Place des Lices is the Rennes go-to British and Irish pub, a charming old building with a long bar and cosy nooks. Saturday mornings bring an English breakfast and live music after the market, afternoons are for matches over a pint. Order a beer and a burger, served until 10:30pm. Open daily. For drinkers who want a proper pub with sport on.
Rennes leans on its courtyards and its pubs. L'Aventure runs an open-air night-bar inside the old prison walls, Le Hibou pairs wine and beer with concerts and exhibitions, and Fox and Friends keeps the city's sport-and-pints corner near Place des Lices. Start with cider, end with a pint.
