Take walk-in seats downstairs early, or book the room upstairs for a quieter night. Still one of the city's steadiest pours.
Barnacle is a skinny 20-seat wine and aperitivo bar on Ballard Avenue, next to Renee Erickson's Walrus and the Carpenter. The list runs European, the amari run deep, and the charcuterie is house-made. It opens at 3. Go midafternoon for a copper-counter seat before the dinner overflow. Order a Negroni and a board of cured meat. Tiny and sharp.
The Doctor's Office seats a dozen on East Olive Way, run by a former Liberty owner and an actual working doctor. The focus is rare Japanese whisky and yakitori, with hot towels at the door. Drinks aren't cheap, but the hospitality earns it. Book through Tock, because walk-ins rarely fit. Go early in the week for the bartender's full attention. A jewel-box bar.
