Edinburgh's rooftop scene is small but it punches hard. The castle and Arthur's Seat hand every elevated bar a view most cities would envy. We pressure-tested the long list and kept only the three rooftops that check out as real and open in 2026, across the Old Town and New Town.
Cold Town House owns the best castle view in the Grassmarket, and a 500,000 pound refit reopened it in 2026 with a retractable transparent roof that keeps up to 120 drinkers dry under Scottish skies. The beer is brewed downstairs, the pizza is Neapolitan, and the rooftop terrace closes at 10 pm. Go early evening, book ahead, and claim a rail seat facing the castle.
The Glasshouse hides a two-acre rooftop garden beneath Calton Hill, a green secret behind a converted 1840s church. The Snug bar stocks more than 200 whiskies and a run of Havana cigars you can carry out to the lawn. Go on a dry summer evening for a dram in the open air, away from the street. Best for a slow, grown-up drink with cigar smoke and birdsong.
Café Calton sits at the foot of Calton Hill on Waterloo Place, an all-day room with terrace seating and a wide view over the city. Evenings turn to cocktails and sunset over the rooftops. Best for a drink with a view; terrace seats are first come, first served.
The Forth Floor Bar tops Harvey Nichols on St Andrew Square, an intimate room with a terrace and views across the Firth of Forth to Fife. The list runs from Champagne to creative cocktails. Best for a polished drink with a north-facing view above the New Town.
Heights crowns the Apex Grassmarket Hotel with a contemporary rooftop room and a terrace facing Edinburgh Castle. Modern Scottish plates pair with wines and cocktails. Best for a castle-view drink in the Old Town.
Juniper sits on the top floor of Hotel Indigo at 20 Princes Street, its full-width windows framing the skyline and the castle. The menu leans on Scottish gins and whiskies with house infusions. Best for a cocktail with one of the best window views on Princes Street.
W Lounge tops W Edinburgh in the St James Quarter on the eleventh floor, built around a twelve-metre granite bar with views over the city. The cellar runs to more than four hundred wines and Champagnes. Best for a high-rise drink with a sweep across Edinburgh.
The 1820 bar crowns the Johnnie Walker experience on Princes Street with floor-to-ceiling glass and an outdoor terrace pointed straight at the castle. It pours whisky cocktails built by the in-house team and a Scottish menu that runs to Cullen skink and cranachan. Open daily 10 am to midnight. Go at dusk for the skyline, and book the terrace rather than the indoor lounge.
Cold Town House and the 1820 bar are the two essentials, both pointed at the castle, both covered enough to run all year. The Glasshouse garden is the warm-weather pick.
Most of these terraces peak between 6 and 9 pm in summer, and the August festival fortnight fills every rail. Book ahead if you want the view rather than the bar queue.
