Idlewild is a small, dim cocktail room in NoDa with no printed menu, where you tell the bartender what you like and trust the result. It is a cocktail bar rather than a beer hall, so come for a well-built drink over a flight of taps. Best on a quiet weeknight when the bartenders have time to riff. Expect a wait on Friday and Saturday after 9pm.

Dot Dot Dot hides in the backlot of Park Road Shopping Center as a membership speakeasy with one of the deepest bourbon back bars in the region. This is a cocktail and whiskey room, not a craft beer bar, but it earns a spot for anyone drinking seriously in south Charlotte. Order off the classics list, and note the door is members-first, so plan ahead.
